Notes – Hebrews 6

Hebrews 6 – Grow Up and Hold On

“This we will do if God permits.” (Hebrews 6:3, NKJV)
“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast…” (v. 19)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • A call to spiritual maturity — move past the basics
  • A strong warning about falling away and rejecting Christ
  • A shift to encouragement for those who continue in faith and love
  • Jesus is shown as our anchor and forerunner, tied to the priesthood of Melchizedek

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Leave the Elementary Teachings (vv. 1–3)

“Let us go on to perfection…”
Foundations are good, but we’re called to grow beyond:

  • Repentance
  • Faith
  • Baptism
  • Laying on of hands
  • Resurrection
  • Eternal judgment

We build on these — we don’t stay stuck in them

2. The Danger of Falling Away (vv. 4–6)

This is one of the most sobering warnings in the Bible:

“It is impossible… to renew them again to repentance…”
Those who experience the light of Christ but then fully reject Him — turning back — face irreversible judgment

3. Fruit vs. Thorns (vv. 7–8)

“That which bears thorns and briers is rejected and near to being cursed…”
True salvation produces fruit
Rejection of Christ produces thorns and fire

4. Encouragement to Keep Going (vv. 9–12)

“Beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you…”
God sees your love and service
Don’t become sluggish — imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises

5. God’s Promise is Certain (vv. 13–18)

“God… confirmed it by an oath… it is impossible for God to lie”
God promised Abraham — and He swore by Himself
His word and His oath are unchangeable, giving us confidence

6. Jesus the Forerunner (vv. 19–20)

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul…”
Jesus has gone behind the veil
He is our forerunner, our High Priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Maturity means moving forward with Jesus, even when it’s hard — because His promises are sure.

  1. Grow Beyond the Basics
Are you stuck on repeat, or are you maturing in your walk?
  2. Stay Anchored in Hope
Jesus went ahead of you — your anchor holds, even when you drift
  3. Don’t Fear Falling — But Don’t Play Games Either
Falling away isn’t about failing — it’s about fully rejecting Christ. Stay close
  4. Imitate the Faithful
Find mentors in Scripture and in life — follow those who endure
