Hebrews 4 – Entering God’s Rest

“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” (Hebrews 4:9, NKJV)
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- A continuation of the warning in chapter 3: Don’t harden your heart through unbelief
- God’s promise of spiritual rest remains available today
- A reminder that God’s Word is alive, sharp, and exposes the heart
- Jesus is presented as a sympathetic High Priest, giving us access to God’s throne of grace
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. A Rest Still Stands (vv. 1–5)
God’s rest isn’t only about the Promised Land — it’s about faithfully trusting Him
“Although the works were finished from the foundation of the world…” (v. 3)
This rest is tied to believing God’s word, not just hearing it
2. Don’t Repeat Israel’s Mistake (vv. 6–11)
“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” (v. 11)
Rest is missed through disobedience and unbelief — the same warning from the wilderness generation applies to us
3. The Word of God Penetrates the Heart (v. 12)
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…”
It discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart
You don’t just read the Word — it reads you
4. Nothing Is Hidden from God (v. 13)
“All things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
God sees everything — not to shame us, but to call us to truth and grace
5. Jesus Our Compassionate High Priest (vv. 14–16)
“We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses…”
Jesus understands human weakness — He’s been tempted in every way
Because of this, we can:
- Hold fast our confession
- Approach the throne of grace boldly
- Receive mercy and help when we need it most
