1 Timothy 3 – Qualifications for Church Leaders

“If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.” (1 Timothy 3:1, NKJV)
“Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh…” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul lays out clear qualifications for two offices in the church: bishops (elders/pastors) and deacons
- These are not just job descriptions — they are character standards
- The focus is on spiritual maturity, family leadership, self-control, and integrity
- The chapter ends with a poetic and powerful statement about the mystery of godliness — Christ Himself
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Qualifications of a Bishop (vv. 1–7)
“A bishop must be blameless…”
Not sinless, but above reproach in conduct
“The husband of one wife…”
Faithful in marriage and morally upright
“Temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior…”
Disciplined, self-controlled, and respectable
“Hospitable, able to teach…”
Willing to serve and grounded in sound doctrine
“Not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money…”
Not controlled by addiction, aggression, or greed
“Gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous…”
A leader with peaceful strength, not driven by materialism
“One who rules his own house well…”
Spiritual leadership starts at home
“Not a novice…”
Spiritual maturity takes time and testing
“Must have a good testimony among those who are outside…”
Integrity matters inside and outside the church
2. Qualifications of Deacons (vv. 8–13)
“Reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine…”
Consistent and spiritually mature
“Not greedy for money…”
Free from financial corruption
“Holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience…”
Anchored in truth, living with spiritual integrity
“Let these also first be tested…”
Leadership requires proven character
“Their wives must be reverent…” (or possibly “women deacons”)
The character of a leader’s spouse (or female leaders) matters too
“Ruling their children and their own houses well…”
Strong household leadership reflects spiritual readiness
“Those who have served well… obtain a good standing…”
Faithful service brings eternal reward and deep respect
3. The Mystery of Godliness (vv. 14–16)
“These things I write… so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself…”
Church life must reflect order and reverence
“The church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
The church’s mission is to support and proclaim God’s truth
“God was manifested in the flesh…”
A clear reference to Jesus: fully God, fully man
“Justified in the Spirit…”
Vindicated by the Holy Spirit’s power
“Seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles…”
Jesus’ life and mission are cosmic and global
“Believed on in the world, received up in glory.”
From earth to heaven — Christ’s work is complete and victorious

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)
Principle: God cares more about your character than your title. Leadership starts with faithfulness.
- Examine Your Character
Leadership begins with personal holiness, not public platform - Lead at Home First
If it doesn’t work at home, it won’t work in ministry — faith begins in family - Serve Humbly
Whether deacon or pastor, serve with humility and joy, not status-seeking - Worship Jesus, Our Perfect Leader
He is the model of godliness — not only to admire but to follow
