1 John 1 – Walking in the Light
“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7, NKJV)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (v. 9)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- The apostle John opens this letter by affirming that Jesus Christ is eternal, real, and knowable
- He testifies that Jesus — the Word of life — was seen, heard, and touched, countering false teachers who denied Christ’s physical reality
- The chapter calls believers to walk in the light, confess sin, and maintain fellowship with both God and each other
- It contrasts truth vs. deception, light vs. darkness, and emphasizes the importance of honest confession before God
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. The Word of Life (vv. 1–2)
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes… and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life…”
John affirms that Jesus is eternal (“from the beginning”) and that His life was physically revealed — not a myth, not an illusion. John and the other apostles had personal, physical experience with Him
“The life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness…”
John’s message is eyewitness testimony — he’s not passing on speculation, but truth he saw and experienced
2. Fellowship Through Christ (v. 3–4)
“That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us…”
John writes so believers can share in fellowship — unity and relationship — with the apostles and ultimately with God the Father and Jesus Christ
“And truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
Christian fellowship isn’t just horizontal (with others), it’s vertical — a shared connection with God Himself
“And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.”
Knowing the truth about Jesus and walking in the light brings deep, lasting joy
3. God Is Light (v. 5)
“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
John sets the foundation: God is completely holy, pure, and truthful — the opposite of sin, deception, or evil
To know God means to walk in light, not in secret sin or hypocrisy
4. Walking in the Light (vv. 6–7)
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
Claiming to know God while living in unrepentant sin is a contradiction
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another…”
To walk in the light means to live openly, honestly, and in obedience to God’s truth
“…and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Those walking in the light are continually cleansed by Jesus’ blood — not perfect, but forgiven and purified
5. Confessing Sin and Finding Forgiveness (vv. 8–10)
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
Self-righteous denial of sin is deception — true believers acknowledge their brokenness
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
This is one of the most hope-filled promises in Scripture: God forgives and cleanses those who confess their sin
“If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
Denying personal sin is equivalent to calling God a liar — a rejection of His truth
