1 Corinthians 16 – Closing Instructions and Encouragement

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13, NKJV)
“Let all that you do be done with love.” (v. 14)
“If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed.” (v. 22)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul gives practical instructions on giving, travel plans, and church relationships
  • He encourages financial support for struggling believers
  • He urges the church to respect spiritual leaders and workers
  • The chapter ends with personal greetings, warnings, and a heartfelt blessing
  • It’s a reminder that the spiritual and practical are always connected

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. The Collection for the Saints (vv. 1–4)

“On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside…”
Paul encourages regular, proportional giving
“That there be no collections when I come.”
Giving should be planned and cheerful, not pressured
“Whomever you approve… I will send to bear your gift…”
Churches were co-laborers in ministry and relief

2. Paul’s Travel Plans (vv. 5–9)

“I will come to you… after I go through Macedonia…”
Paul lays out his plans — but leaves room for God’s direction
“I will tarry in Ephesus until Pentecost…”
He was committed to staying where the work was fruitful
“A great and effective door has opened… and there are many adversaries.”
Open doors don’t mean ease — often, they bring spiritual opposition

3. Commending Other Servants (vv. 10–12)

“If Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without fear…”
Paul defends and supports younger leaders
“Let no one despise him…”
Churches are called to honor and encourage those who serve
“Apollos… was quite unwilling to come at this time…”
Even leaders have freedom and discernment in their ministry

4. Final Exhortations (vv. 13–18)

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.”
Paul’s spiritual charge — courage, conviction, and alertness
“Let all that you do be done with love.”
Even boldness must be clothed in love
“Submit to such… and to everyone who works and labors with us.”
Honor those who are servants in the church

5. Personal Greetings and Benediction (vv. 19–24)

“The churches of Asia greet you… with the church that is in their house.”
The early church was deeply connected and relational
“If anyone does not love the Lord… let him be accursed.”
sobering reminder that love for Jesus is not optional
“O Lord, come!” (Maranatha)
Paul closes with an urgent cry for Christ’s return
“My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
Final words of grace and personal affection

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Faithful Christian living involves bold conviction, generous giving, and genuine love.

  1. Give Regularly and Joyfully
Make giving a habit of worship, not just a reaction
  2. Support God’s Workers
Honor those who labor in the Word, missions, and service
  3. Live with Watchful Courage
Stand firm. Don’t retreat. Hold the line in faith
  4. Let Love Drive Everything
Courage without love becomes cruelty — love is the anchor
  5. Long for His Return
Live every day with a Maranatha mindset — “O Lord, come!”
