Jesus is the Source of Life – A Study on the Gospel of John – Lisa Starling

Introduction

The Gospel of John stands apart from the other Gospels in both style and purpose. While Matthew, Mark, and Luke provide a more chronological account of Jesus’ life and ministry, John focuses on Jesus’ identity as the Son of God and the source of life. John’s purpose in writing is clear:

“These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31, ESV)

This study will explore key themes in the Gospel of John, including Jesus’ divinity, the seven signs, and the “I Am” statements that reveal His identity as the Messiah.

1. The Purpose and Background of John’s Gospel

The Gospel of John was written by the disciple John, likely between 85–90 AD, after most of the other apostles had already died. John’s goal was not just to recount Jesus’ life but to provide evidence that Jesus is the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the source of eternal life.

Unique Aspects of John’s Gospel:

    • The first three Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) are called the Synoptic Gospels because they present similar perspectives on Jesus’ life.

    • John’s Gospel is different—it focuses on Jesus’ identity rather than the events of His ministry.

2. Jesus’ Divinity and Eternal Nature

John begins his Gospel with a profound statement about Jesus’ divine nature:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

✔ Jesus is called the Word (Logos)—the eternal expression of God’s nature and creative power.

✔ He was not created; He was with God from the beginning and is fully God.

Key Insight:

Jesus is not just a teacher or a prophet—He is God Himself, present at creation and eternally existing with the Father and the Spirit.

3. Jesus as Creator and Source of Life

“All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:3)

✔ Jesus is not only eternal but actively involved in the creation of the universe.

✔ Life itself originates from Him—both physical life and eternal spiritual life.

✔ Salvation and eternal life are possible only through Him.

Key Insight:

Jesus is the Creator and sustainer of life—apart from Him, there is no true life.

4. Jesus as the Light of the World

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5)

✔ Jesus brings spiritual illumination to a dark world.

✔ Darkness represents sin, unbelief, and separation from God.

✔ The light of Christ exposes truth and offers hope to a fallen world.

Key Insight:

Jesus is the light that dispels spiritual darkness. His truth overcomes the lies and confusion of the world.

5. John the Baptist as a Witness

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.” (John 1:6-7)

✔ John the Baptist’s mission was to point people to Jesus.

✔ He was not the light—he was a witness to the light (Jesus).

✔ His role was to prepare the way for the Messiah and confirm Jesus’ identity as the Son of God.

Key Insight:

John’s testimony reinforces the truth that Jesus is the Messiah.

6. Salvation Through Belief and Reception

“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

Salvation requires two responses:

✔ Belief – Intellectual acknowledgment that Jesus is the Son of God.

✔ Reception – Accepting Him personally as Lord and Savior.

Example:

Just as receiving a gift requires both acceptance and possession, receiving salvation requires both belief and surrender.

Key Insight:

Salvation requires belief and reception – accepting Jesus as both Savior and Lord.

7. The Incarnation of Jesus

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory.” (John 1:14)

✔ Jesus, fully God, became fully man.

✔ His dwelling among people fulfilled the Old Testament image of God’s presence in the tabernacle.

Key Insight:

The Incarnation is central to the Christian faith—God came to live among us.

8. The Seven Signs in John’s Gospel

John records seven miraculous signs to reveal Jesus’ identity as the Son of God:

    1. Water to wine (John 2:1–11)

    2. Healing the official’s son (John 4:46–54)

    3. Healing the lame man (John 5:1–15)

    4. Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1–14)

    5. Walking on water (John 6:15–21)

    6. Healing the blind man (John 9:1–41)

    7. Raising Lazarus (John 11:1–44)

Key Insight:

The signs point to Jesus’ divinity and confirm that He is the Messiah.

9. The Seven “I Am” Statements

Jesus makes seven declarations about His identity using the phrase “I Am”:

✔ I am the bread of life (John 6:35)

✔ I am the light of the world (John 8:12)

    ✔ I am the gate (John 10:9)

✔ I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)

✔ I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)

✔ I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)

✔ I am the true vine (John 15:1)

10. Grace and Truth Through Jesus

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)

11. Eternal Life Through Jesus

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Conclusion

The Gospel of John presents Jesus as the Son of God, the Creator, the Light of the World, and the source of eternal life. John’s testimony, the seven signs, and the “I Am” statements all point to the truth that Jesus is the Messiah and the only way to salvation.

Call to Action:

Have you believed and received Jesus as your Savior? The invitation is open to all—receive Him and experience the abundant and eternal life He offers.

Logical Breakdown of the Truth Table

This truth table illustrates the only way for both God to remain holy and for us to be saved. Let’s analyze the logic behind it:

H (God is Holy) – True/False

S (Sin Exists) – True/False

J (Sin Requires Justice) – True/False

T (Jesus Takes Punishment) – True/False

W (We Can Be Holy) – True/False

Truth Table:

✅ H = True, S = True, J = True, T = True, W = True → Salvation possible

❌ H = True, S = False, J = False, T = True, W = False → No salvation needed

❌ H = False, S = True, J = True, T = False, W = False → No salvation possible

❌ H = False, S = False, J = False, T = False, W = False → No God, no salvation

1️⃣ Row 1: The Only Way to Salvation ✅

• God is Holy ✅ (Isaiah 6:3)

• Sin Exists ✅ (Romans 3:23)

• Sin Requires Justice ✅ (Romans 6:23)

• Jesus’ Sacrifice Takes Our Punishment ✅ (1 Peter 2:24)

• We Can Be Holy ✅ (2 Corinthians 5:21)

➡️ This is the only valid path to salvation! (Hebrews 10:14)

2️⃣ Row 2: If There’s No Sin, There’s No Need for Salvation ❌

• God is Holy ✅ (Isaiah 6:3)

• No Sin ❌ → No justice needed ❌

• Jesus’ Sacrifice Still Happened ✅ (Romans 5:8)

• We Are Not Made Holy ❌

➡️ This scenario doesn’t apply because all have sinned (Romans 3:23).

3️⃣ Row 3: If God is Not Holy, Sin Wouldn’t Require Justice ❌

• God is Not Holy ❌

• Sin Exists ✅ (Romans 5:12)

• Sin Requires Justice ✅ (Romans 6:23)

• Jesus Didn’t Take the Punishment ❌

• We Cannot Be Holy ❌

➡️ If God were not holy, He could ignore sin, but that would make Him unjust (Deuteronomy 32:4).

4️⃣ Row 4: If There’s No God, No Sin, and No Justice ❌

• God is Not Holy ❌

• No Sin ❌ → No justice needed ❌

• Jesus Did Not Die ❌

• We Are Not Holy ❌

➡️ This is an atheistic or self-righteous view, contradicting Scripture (Romans 6:23).

🔥 Why the Truth Table Proves John 14:6 Is the Only Way

👉 The truth table points directly to John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Every row in the table makes it clear — there is no other way to salvation except through Jesus. If God is not holy, there is no justice. If sin doesn’t exist, salvation isn’t needed. If Jesus didn’t take the punishment, we remain in sin. Every logical path without Jesus ends in spiritual death 🚫 — but with Jesus, we have eternal life ✅. Jesus stands alone as the only solution that satisfies both God’s holiness and His mercy. There is no Plan B. Only Jesus. Only the cross. Only grace. 🙌✝️❤️

Conclusion: Why a Perfect Sacrifice Is the Only Way

✔ If God ignored sin, He would not be just.

✔ If God only judged sin without mercy, no one could be saved.

✔ Only through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice can we be made holy while God remains holy and just.

Why This Truth Table Is Theologically Necessary:

1. If God is not holy → There is no moral basis for justice.

2. If sin does not exist → There is no need for salvation.

3. If sin does not require justice → Jesus’ sacrifice would be unnecessary.

4. If Jesus did not take our punishment → God’s justice would remain unsatisfied.

5. If we cannot be made holy → We would remain separated from God.

➡️ The logical consistency of these truths shows that salvation through Jesus Christ is not just a matter of faith — it is the only path that satisfies God’s justice, mercy, and holiness while offering humanity eternal life.

John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

➡️ The Gospel message holds together both logically and theologically — and that is why Jesus is the only way to salvation.
