Matthew 14:22-33 – Walking on the Water
One of the most inspiring moments in the Bible comes when Peter steps out of the boat and walks toward Jesus on the water. Imagine the scene: It’s night, and the disciples are alone in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, struggling against the wind and waves. Suddenly, they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. At first, they’re terrified, thinking He’s a ghost, but Jesus calls out, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:27, ESV).
Peter responds in an incredible way. “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water,” he says. And Jesus simply replies, “Come” (Matthew 14:28-29). With that one word, Peter steps out of the boat, taking a step of faith that’s both thrilling and terrifying. He walks on water, focused on Jesus, until he notices the strong wind and begins to sink. Peter cries out, “Lord, save me,” and immediately, Jesus reaches out and catches him (Matthew 14:30-31).
Stepping Out of Our Boats
In life, we all have our “boats”—places of comfort, security, and familiarity. Stepping out in faith is like Peter stepping out of the boat. It means leaving behind what feels safe and familiar to walk into the unknown, relying entirely on Jesus.
When Jesus calls us to take a step of faith, it could mean forgiving someone who hurt us, sharing our testimony, starting a new ministry, or trusting Him with our future. These are moments when we’re called to put our trust in Jesus, even if it doesn’t seem logical or easy.
Focus on Jesus, Not the Waves
As Peter starts to walk toward Jesus, his focus shifts from Jesus to the storm around him. The wind and waves represent the challenges and doubts we face. Like Peter, when we start to focus on the storms in our lives—financial difficulties, relationship struggles, health issues—we begin to feel overwhelmed. Our faith falters, and we start to sink.
But the key here is this: When Peter cried out, “Lord, save me,” Jesus was right there. He immediately reached out His hand and caught Peter. Jesus didn’t let Peter struggle alone, and He won’t leave us to struggle alone either.
How to Walk by Faith Even in the Storms
Here’s a practical guide for increasing your faith and keeping your eyes on Jesus:
1. Spend Time in God’s Word Daily
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17, ESV)
Reading and meditating on Scripture helps us to know God’s character and His promises. When we know that God is faithful, we find the courage to trust Him, even when things look uncertain.
2. Pray and Talk to Jesus Throughout the Day
“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, ESV)
Prayer keeps us connected to Jesus and reminds us that He is with us. We can talk to Him honestly about our fears, ask for His guidance, and listen for His voice, just as Peter did when he asked Jesus to command him to come on the water.
3. Seek Community and Support
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” (Hebrews 10:24, ESV)
Walking in faith isn’t something we’re meant to do alone. Surround yourself with people who encourage you to keep your eyes on Jesus and remind you of God’s faithfulness.
4. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus, Not the Circumstances
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2, ESV)
When worries start to creep in, refocus on Jesus. Whether through worship, prayer, or repeating a favorite verse, bring your attention back to Him. Remember, He has power over every storm.
5. Trust That Jesus Will Save You When You Call Out
“The Lord is near to all who call on him.” (Psalm 145:18, ESV)
When we feel like we’re sinking, all we need to do is call out, “Lord, save me.” He hears us and will come to our aid.
Remember, Jesus is Always with Us
The beauty of Peter’s story is that, despite his moment of doubt, Jesus was right there. Jesus didn’t shame Peter for his lack of faith; instead, He reached out and caught him. This is true for us too. When we step out in faith and stumble, Jesus is there to lift us up. When we struggle, He is there to calm our fears. His love and presence are constant.
Closing Thought
Today, take that first step. Step out of your “boat” and walk toward Jesus. Keep your focus on Him, not on the waves. When the storms of life arise, remember, Jesus is only a prayer away. He is ready to reach out and lift you up. So, trust Him, walk with Him, and know that He will never leave you.
