Trusting God Through the Storm of Cancer

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness

“My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer (invasive ductile carcinoma) eleven years ago. This devastated us, and we could only pray and trust God. I would pray with tears in my eyes, claiming that God is sovereign and knows every cancerous cell in Cindy’s body. God worked miracle after miracle, shrinking the size of the tumor, giving her the best breast surgeon, giving her clean scans with no cancer spread, providing clean margins, and allowing us to skip chemotherapy and only deal with 50 radiation treatments and 5 years of oncology treatments. God was so good.”

Facing Cancer with Faith

A cancer diagnosis is one of the most challenging experiences anyone can face. It brings fear, uncertainty, and often immense physical and emotional pain. However, as Christians, we have the assurance that we are not alone in this battle. God is with us, and He cares deeply about our suffering.

Praying Through the Pain

  1. Honest and Open Prayer: It’s okay to come to God with your fears and tears. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Be honest with God about your emotions and struggles.
  2. Praying Scripture: Using the Word of God in your prayers can be a powerful way to claim His promises. Verses like Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,” can bring comfort and reassurance.
  3. Trust in God’s Sovereignty: Acknowledge God’s control over every cell in your body, just as you did. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
  4. Intercessory Prayer: Don’t hesitate to ask others to pray for you and your loved one. James 5:14-15 instructs us, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.”

Surrendering to God

Surrendering your situation to God involves releasing your grip on the outcome and trusting in His plan, even when it is hard to understand. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Seeking Strength in Community

The body of Christ is a source of tremendous support. Engage with your church community, attend prayer groups, and let others walk with you through this journey. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us of the importance of fellowship, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Reflecting on God’s Goodness

Even in the midst of trials, take time to reflect on God’s goodness and the blessings He has provided. Just as you witnessed miracles in your wife’s treatment, look for God’s hand at work in your life. Psalm 103:2-3 encourages us to, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases.”

Conclusion

Facing cancer is a daunting journey, but with faith, prayer, and a supportive community, it is possible to navigate this path with hope and trust in God’s sovereignty. Remember, God is with you every step of the way, and He is the ultimate healer and source of comfort. Keep praying, keep trusting, and lean on the strength of your faith and community.
