People Pleasing

The Bible offers wisdom on where we should seek our acceptance and validation, emphasizing the importance of finding our worth in God’s eyes rather than solely in human approval. In Galatians 1:10, Paul poses a reflective question that highlights this principle:

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

This verse underscores the idea that striving for human approval can divert us from our true purpose of serving and living for Christ.

Furthermore, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about doing righteous deeds not for human admiration but for God who sees in secret. In Matthew 6:1, He says,

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”

This teaching encourages believers to focus on God’s recognition rather than human applause, ensuring that their actions are motivated by a genuine love for God and others, not by the desire for human approval.

The pursuit of acceptance from others can often lead to compromising one’s values and conforming to expectations that stray from God’s desires. Romans 12:2 advises,

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

This passage reminds believers to seek God’s will and standards above all, aligning their lives with His perfect and acceptable will rather than the fleeting and often superficial standards of the world.

In essence, the Bible encourages finding acceptance and validation in God’s love and approval, seeking to please Him through our lives. This perspective liberates believers from the pressure of meeting human expectations, allowing them to live authentically and purposefully in accordance with God’s will.

Finding Freedom

Overcoming the desire for human approval is a journey that involves shifting our focus and finding our identity and worth in God. The Bible provides guidance and principles to help in this transformation.

Seek God First

Matthew 6:33 teaches,

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Prioritizing our relationship with God and His righteousness helps realign our values and desires, reducing the weight we place on human approval.

Renew Your Mind

Romans 12:2 advises,

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Regularly immersing ourselves in God’s Word and prayer can transform our thinking and help us value God’s approval over human approval.

Understand Your Identity in Christ

Knowing who you are in Christ is crucial. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, it’s declared,

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Recognizing our new identity as God’s children can liberate us from seeking validation from others.

Practice Obedience to God

John 15:19 reminds believers,

“If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

Being faithful to God’s commands and teachings, even when they are counter to societal norms, strengthens our resolve to seek His approval above others’.

Find Community in Believers

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages,

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Being part of a community that values God’s standards and encourages spiritual growth can provide support and accountability as we shift our desire for approval from people to God.

Reflect on the Love of God

Understanding the depth of God’s love for us can profoundly impact our need for human approval. Ephesians 3:17-19 prays that believers,

“being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Recognizing God’s immense love for us helps diminish the importance of human approval.

By applying these Biblical principles, we can begin to shift our focus from seeking human approval to desiring God’s approval, finding our value and identity in Him. This transformation is a process, involving daily commitment and reliance on God’s strength.
