How Can I Be Humble?

Humility is recognizing our need for God, understanding our own limitations, and valuing others as much as ourselves. It involves a willingness to put God’s will above our own and to serve others without seeking recognition or reward.

Look to Jesus as Your Example

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:5-7 ESV). Jesus, even being in the form of God, chose to humble Himself, serving others and ultimately sacrificing His life for our salvation.

Value Others Above Yourself

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3 ESV). This means genuinely caring for others, listening more than speaking, and putting the needs of others before your own.

Seek God’s Guidance and Strength

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV). Recognize that true wisdom and strength come from God, not from our own abilities or understanding.

Be Teachable

“Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray” (Proverbs 10:17 ESV). Humility involves being open to learning, accepting correction, and being willing to admit when you are wrong.

Serve Others

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10 ESV). Look for opportunities to serve in your community, in your church, and in your relationships. Serving not only benefits those you help but also grows humility in you.

Pray for a Humble Heart

Regularly ask God to cultivate humility in your heart, to reveal areas of pride, and to help you rely on Him more fully. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10 ESV).

Conclusion

Remember, humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. It is a journey, not a destination, and it grows as you continue to walk with God and follow Jesus’ example.
