Indeed, politics can become an idol if it takes the place of God in one’s heart and life. The Bible warns us against idolatry in various forms. In Exodus 20:3, it is written, “You shall have no other gods before me.” This commandment underscores the importance of placing God above all else.
When politics, or any other pursuit, becomes the primary focus of our lives, it can lead us away from our devotion to God. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus advises, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse emphasizes the priority that should be given to God’s kingdom over all earthly matters, including politics.
It is crucial to engage in politics with a heart that seeks justice, mercy, and humility, as stated in Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Therefore, while participating in political activities is not inherently wrong, it becomes problematic when it surpasses our devotion to God and leads us away from His commandments. Let us always ensure that our ultimate allegiance is to the Lord and His teachings.
