Like letter 1, letter 2 uses the tactic of distraction. Uncle Screwtape begins by scolding Wormwood for letting his Patient become a Christian. But gives Wormwood some hope that all is not lost. Many have gotten involved in religion and attending church. Screwtape instructs Wormwood to attack the man’s spiritual immaturity. ** We are most vulnerable when we are babies; we depend on our parents for life and food. The same is true when we are babes in Christ. We are vulnerable if we fall away from our Father in Heaven and get distracted by playing Church.
Some of the most vicious fights occur in church. Many a church split over a building project or type of music being offered. What I don’t understand is once saved always saved doesn’t square with Screwtape’s assertion that we can lose our salvation. My perspective is Screwtape is making a comment that Christ made in scriptures. Many will say, Lord I cast out devils in your name… and Jesus will say, depart from me, I never knew you. Church is full of people who play church but are not saved. This is one of the safest places for demons to keep these unsaved people unsaved. They are comfortable… they have their peer group they socialize with… they have so much going on that they stay distracted… they see hypocricy and assume all Christians are hypocrites.
Following Christ is hard. We will have trials and tribulations just like Christ did. People will hate us…. Especially now days… I have to be careful about what I say on social media about my convictions.
