Revelation 3 – The Final Three Churches: Wake Up, Hold Fast, and Don’t Be Lukewarm
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 3:6, NKJV)
Jesus continues His evaluation of the churches with sharp correction, deep encouragement, and clear promises.
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Three final letters to the churches in Asia Minor: Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea
- Each church is evaluated by Jesus—some praised, some rebuked, some warned
- Jesus urges repentance, perseverance, and intimacy with Him
- Each message ends with a reward “to him who overcomes”
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. To Sardis – “You have a name, but you are dead” (vv. 1–6)
“I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.”
- Sardis had a reputation for being spiritual, but Jesus saw spiritual death
“Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain…”
- There was still hope — revival was possible
“If you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief…”
- A warning to stay awake spiritually
“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments…”
- Promise of eternal life and security

2. To Philadelphia – “You have a little strength” (vv. 7–13)
“He who opens and no one shuts… I have set before you an open door…”
- Jesus has the key of David — absolute authority
- The church is weak in strength but strong in faithfulness
“You have kept My word and not denied My name.”
- Philadelphia is commended without rebuke
“Because you have kept My command… I will keep you from the hour of trial…”
- Likely a reference to being spared from the Tribulation
“He who overcomes… I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God.”
- Eternal stability, identity, and presence with God

3. To Laodicea – “You are lukewarm” (vv. 14–22)
“You are neither cold nor hot… I will vomit you out of My mouth.”
- Laodicea is indifferent and self-sufficient
- Jesus desires zeal and intimacy, not complacency
“You say, ‘I am rich…’ but you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.”
- Spiritual blindness from material comfort
“I counsel you to buy from Me gold… white garments… eye salve…”
- Jesus offers true riches, righteousness, and healing
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.”
- His rebuke is an act of love
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…”
- A personal invitation to fellowship
“To him who overcomes… I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.”
- A stunning reward for repentant intimacy

- Don’t rely on reputation — check for real spiritual life
- Persevere in Weakness
- Even a little strength + faithfulness = great reward
- Hold fast to His Word when the world drifts
- Reject Lukewarmness
- Self-sufficiency leads to blindness
- Return to zeal and repentance
- Answer the Knock
- Jesus doesn’t force His way in — He waits to be welcomed
- Embrace His Discipline
- His correction is a sign of His love, not rejection
