Acts 13 – Sent by the Spirit, Opposed by Darkness, Received with Joy
“Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” (Acts 13:2)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
The Church at Antioch is praying and fasting when the Holy Spirit commissions Barnabas and Saul. They begin their first missionary journey, preaching through Cyprus and Asia Minor. Paul preaches a bold Gospel message in Pisidian Antioch, but faces both opposition and fruitfulness. The Gospel is now moving in power and clarity beyond Jerusalem.
- The prophets and teachers in Antioch worship and fast; the Holy Spirit speaks, setting apart Barnabas and Saul.
- They lay hands on them and send them off with John Mark as their assistant.
- In Cyprus, they preach in synagogues. They encounter Elymas (Bar-Jesus), a Jewish sorcerer who opposes them.
- Paul rebukes Elymas, calling him a “son of the devil,” and strikes him blind. The proconsul Sergius Paulus believes after seeing the power of God.
- In Pisidian Antioch, Paul preaches in the synagogue—retelling Israel’s history and connecting it to Jesus as the Messiah.
- Paul preaches the resurrection and justification by faith in Jesus—something the Law of Moses could never do.
- Some Jews become jealous and stir up opposition, but Gentiles receive the Word with joy.
- Paul and Barnabas boldly declare: “We turn to the Gentiles!”
- The Jews expel them, but the disciples are filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- God Directs the Mission (vv. 1–4)
The Church doesn’t act on impulse—they wait on God. The Holy Spirit initiates the mission, affirming that all true Gospel work must be Spirit-sent and prayer-covered. - Spiritual Opposition Will Arise (vv. 5–12)
Elymas represents the forces of deception that always oppose truth. Paul, filled with the Spirit, confronts him boldly—showing that Gospel work is also spiritual warfare. - The Gospel Declared and Fulfilled (vv. 13–41)
Paul preaches with authority and clarity, connecting Jesus to Israel’s promises. The resurrection is central, and salvation is by grace through faith—not works of the Law. - The Gospel Divides—but Bears Fruit (vv. 42–52)
Some rejoice, others reject. This is the pattern of evangelism. The mission shifts as Paul and Barnabas make a clear turn to the Gentiles—fulfilling prophecy.

Principle: God’s mission requires Spirit-led boldness, prayerful preparation, and a willingness to speak truth even when it divides.
- Listen Before You Go
Don’t rush ministry or decisions—wait for God’s direction through prayer and community. - Expect Resistance and Stand Firm
If you’re doing Kingdom work, you’ll face opposition. Don’t retreat—stand in the Spirit’s authority. - Preach a Complete Gospel
The resurrection and justification by faith are not side notes—they’re central. Be clear, bold, and Christ-centered. - Don’t Fear Rejection
Some will resist, some will rejoice. Leave the results to God. Stay faithful and keep preaching. - Carry Joy, Not Bitterness
Even after rejection and expulsion, Paul and Barnabas are filled with joy. Don’t let persecution steal your peace.
