Acts 17 – Reasoning with the World: Bold in Truth, Gentle in Approach
“These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.” (Acts 17:6)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
Paul preaches the Gospel in three cities—Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens—each responding in different ways. He reasons from Scripture, faces jealous mobs, praises those who search the Scriptures, and finally gives one of the most iconic apologetic speeches in the New Testament on Mars Hill.
- In Thessalonica, Paul goes to the synagogue and reasons from the Scriptures that the Messiah had to suffer and rise. Some Jews and many Greeks believe.
- Jealous Jews stir up a mob, attacking Jason’s house where Paul stayed.
- Paul and Silas flee to Berea, where the Jews are noble-minded—they eagerly receive the word and search the Scriptures daily.
- Many believe, but the Thessalonian mob follows them to stir up more trouble.
- Paul is sent to Athens alone. He’s provoked in spirit by all the idols.
- He reasons with Jews and Gentiles, including philosophers—Epicureans and Stoics—who bring him to the Areopagus (Mars Hill).
- Paul respectfully presents the Gospel using creation, conscience, and resurrection:
- God made the world
- He gives life and breath to all
- He appointed the times and boundaries of nations
- He commands repentance, having appointed a Judge (Jesus), proven by the resurrection
- Some mock, others are curious, and a few believe—including Dionysius and Damaris.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- The Gospel Turns the World Upside Down (vv. 1–9)
Paul’s message disrupted the religious and political status quo. The Kingdom of God challenges human systems. - The Berean Spirit Honors the Word (vv. 10–15)
Unlike the Thessalonians, the Bereans eagerly examined Scripture. They model the right way to receive teaching—with open minds and open Bibles. - Apologetics in a Pagan World (vv. 16–34)
Paul adapts his message without compromising it. He starts with creation, appeals to truth, and lands on resurrection and judgment. This is powerful, context-aware evangelism. - The Mixed Response Is Normal
Some scoff, some delay, and some believe. Evangelism isn’t about results—it’s about faithfulness and clarity.

Principle: Bold, Spirit-led reasoning combined with Scripture and cultural awareness can powerfully engage hearts—even in hostile environments.
- Know the Word and Reason Well
Don’t just quote verses—understand them, reason with them, and be ready to defend your hope with gentleness and truth. - Be a Berean, Not Just a Listener
Open your Bible daily. Check what you hear. Measure every sermon, podcast, or idea against the Word. - Let a Broken Culture Move You to Action
Paul didn’t rage at the idols in Athens—he reasoned and shared Jesus. Don’t retreat from culture; engage it with truth and compassion. - Trust the Process—Even When Responses Vary
You may be mocked. You may be ignored. But someone like Dionysius or Damaris may hear you and be forever changed. - Speak of Resurrection and Judgment
Don’t avoid hard truths. The resurrection proves who Jesus is, and judgment calls us to repentance.
