2 Corinthians 3 – The Glory of the New Covenant

“You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men.” (2 Corinthians 3:2, NKJV)
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves… but our sufficiency is from God.” (v. 5)
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (v. 17)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul defends his ministry and shifts focus to the New Covenant
- He calls the believers a living “letter” from Christ
- He contrasts the Old Covenant (law, death, fading) with the New Covenant (Spirit, life, glory)
- Paul reminds them that the Spirit gives life and transforms believers into the image of Christ
- He speaks of freedom and transformation that comes from the Holy Spirit
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Living Letters (vv. 1–3)
“Do we begin again to commend ourselves?”
Paul isn’t promoting himself — the believers are his credentials
“You are an epistle of Christ… written not with ink but by the Spirit…”
Lives transformed by Jesus are the greatest proof of true ministry
2. Sufficiency from God (vv. 4–6)
“We have such trust through Christ toward God.”
Confidence in ministry comes from Christ, not self
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves…”
Paul relies fully on God’s equipping
“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”
Law alone condemns, but the Spirit gives life and freedom
3. The Old vs. New Covenant (vv. 7–11)
“If the ministry of death… was glorious… how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?”
The law had glory — but the gospel surpasses it
“What was made glorious had no glory… because of the glory that excels.”
God’s New Covenant is permanent and greater in every way
“The ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.”
Grace brings lasting transformation, not condemnation
4. Beholding His Glory (vv. 12–18)
“Moses… put a veil over his face…”
Paul recalls how the Israelites couldn’t handle God’s glory
“Their minds were blinded… the veil remains unlifted…”
Only in Christ is the veil taken away
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
Freedom from sin, shame, and self — found only in the Spirit
“We… beholding… the glory of the Lord, are being transformed…”
Looking to Jesus leads to ongoing spiritual transformation
