Behavior is not the problem. Belief is. And the belief is not mainly about you.
You have already done the honest work of naming it. You know the thing you keep going back to. You have confessed it out loud to a man who did not flinch. You have stopped calling it a slip and started calling it a pattern. That is real ground, and most men never get there.
So why is it still here?
Because you have been treating the pattern as information about yourself, when it is also information about God. Every repeated sin is a sentence you are finishing about His character. You would never say that sentence out loud in a Bible study. You say it every time you reach.
The Question Under the Question
The standard counsel goes like this: find the lie you believe about yourself. I am worthless. I am too far gone. I will always be this. Those are real lies and they need replacing. But go one layer down and ask why those lies have any power at all. A lie about yourself only holds if there is a lie about God standing behind it, propping it up.
“I am too far gone” is only terrifying if God is the kind of God whose patience runs out. “I have to handle this myself” is only reasonable if God is the kind of God who is not paying attention. “I need this to get through tonight” is only true if God is the kind of God who withholds.
The pattern is not random. It is a verdict you have quietly reached about what God is like, and then it is your strategy for living in a world run by that God. Change the verdict and the strategy loses its logic.
Eden Was a Slander Before It Was a Bite
Watch how the first sin actually worked. The serpent did not begin with the fruit. He began with the character of God.
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? … For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (KJV)
Genesis 3:1, 5
Read it again. The first move is a question about whether God is generous. The second is an accusation that God is holding out. God knows. God is keeping something from you. God is not for you; He is managing you.
Only after the slander lands does the fruit look good. Eve does not eat because the fruit changed. She eats because God changed in her mind. The behavior is downstream. It was always downstream.
That is the architecture of your pattern too. Somewhere you accepted a slander about God, and everything you do now makes perfect sense if the slander is true.
The Man Who Buried It
Jesus told a parable about three servants and their master money. Two of them traded and doubled it. The third dug a hole. When the master came back, the third man explained himself, and his explanation is one of the most revealing sentences in the Gospels.
Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth. (KJV)
Matthew 25:24-25
He did not say, I was lazy. He said, I knew thee. His theology produced his behavior. He had decided the master was harsh, and once that was settled, burying the money was not cowardice. It was prudence. Given his God, he did the smart thing.
That is what makes your pattern so stubborn. You are not being irrational. You are being perfectly rational about a God who does not exist.
Read Your Own Behavior Backward
Here is the work. Do not start with the sin and ask why you did it. Start with the sin and ask what would have to be true about God for this to be a good idea.
- You hide the failure from your wife. What must be true about God? That He exposes men to destroy them, not to heal them.
- You numb out every night at ten. What must be true about God? That He will not meet you in the ache, so the ache must be managed privately.
- You overwork until your family is a rumor. What must be true about God? That His approval is earned, and you are behind.
- You lash out when you are cornered. What must be true about God? That no one is defending you, so you had better defend yourself.
- You go back to the same image, the same bottle, the same escape. What must be true about God? That He gives commands but not comfort.
Write the sentence down. Not a feeling, a sentence. “I believe God is ____.” Most men have never seen their own theology in their own handwriting, and it is a sobering thing to look at. It is also the first honest map anyone has drawn of the place you actually live.
The Character You Are Accusing
Now put your sentence beside His. God has not left His character to your guesswork. He announced it Himself, out loud, on a mountain, to a man who had just watched a nation betray Him.
The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. (KJV)
Exodus 34:6-7
Longsuffering. The word means His patience is long in duration, not thin and fraying. Abundant in goodness. Not rationing it. Keeping mercy for thousands. Stockpiling it, holding it in reserve, having more of it than there are people to give it to.
And if that still reads like words on a page, look at what it cost Him to prove it. A God who withholds does not send His Son. A God who is watching for a reason to be done with you does not lay your guilt on Him instead.
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? (KJV)
Romans 8:32
That is the argument from the greater to the lesser, and it is aimed straight at the lie under your pattern. If He did not spare the Son, what exactly do you think He is holding back from you now?
The Decision You Have Been Avoiding
So here is the confrontation, and it is not about the behavior. You have to decide whether you are going to keep calling God a hard man.
You will not say it that way. You will say you are struggling. You will say you are working on it. But every return to the pattern is a testimony given in court, and the testimony is: God cannot be trusted with this part of me. That is not a small thing. That is the thing.
Repentance at this level is not promising to try harder. It is retracting the accusation.
The Path Forward
- Name the God you have been living under. One sentence, written down. “I have believed God is ____.” No softening it.
- Find the text that contradicts it. Not a verse that makes you feel better. One that directly denies your sentence. If you believe He is stingy, Romans 8:32. If you believe He is out of patience, Exodus 34:6. If you believe He exposes to shame, John 8:10-11.
- Say the true sentence out loud before you need it. Not in the moment of temptation. In the morning, cold, when nothing is on fire. Belief is built in the calm and spent in the crisis.
- Tell one man what your sentence was. The lie about God survives on privacy the same way the behavior did. Say it to someone who will say the truer thing back.
- Expect the pattern to lose its logic slowly. You are not removing a habit. You are dismantling a worldview, and worldviews come down brick by brick.
What Changes When God Changes
Here is what I want you to see. When the verdict about God changes, the pattern does not have to be fought so much as abandoned. You do not white-knuckle your way out of a strategy that no longer makes sense. You simply stop needing it.
The man who buried the money did not need more discipline. He needed a different master, or rather, the true one. And you have Him. The Father who ran down the road while the boy was still a long way off. The Son who went to a cross for a people who were still His enemies. The Spirit who did not leave when you failed again last week.
That God is not managing you. He is not holding out. He is not tired of you. And the day you actually believe that, the thing you keep doing will look like what it always was: a solution to a problem you never had, offered by a liar who has been quoting your Father wrong since the garden.
Put the shovel down. The master is not a hard man.
