SOAP: John 2:1–8

S — Scripture

John 2:1-8

The Wedding at Cana

[1] On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. [2] Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. [3] When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” [4] And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” [5] His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

[6] Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. [7] Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. [8] And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

O — Observation

Jesus chooses a wedding, not a synagogue or a sermon, to reveal His glory. He steps into an ordinary human crisis—embarrassment, shortage, unmet expectation—and quietly transforms it into abundance. The vessels He uses are stone jars for ritual cleansing, symbols of old religious systems focused on external purity. Jesus fills them with something entirely new. His first sign is not about spectacle; it’s about transformation—turning what was empty, insufficient, and ceremonial into something rich, joyful, and life-giving. Glory is revealed not through announcement, but through obedience and trust.

A — Application

God often asks for simple obedience before visible results. The servants weren’t asked to understand the miracle—only to participate in it. They filled jars with water when wine was the problem. That’s the tension of faith: obedience in the absence of clarity. Many miracles stall because we want explanation before action. This passage calls me to stop waiting for certainty and start obeying what Christ has already spoken. My role is not to create the outcome, but to faithfully fill the jars placed in front of me.

P — Prayer

Lord, teach me to obey without demanding explanation. Quiet my need for control and sharpen my willingness to act on Your word alone. Help me trust that You are working even when I only see water and effort. Make my life a vessel You can fill and transform for Your glory. I choose today to do whatever You tell me—fully, promptly, and without hesitation.
