Notes – Matthew 6

Matthew 6 – The Secret Life: Righteousness, Prayer, and Kingdom Focus

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (vv. 4, 6, 18)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Jesus teaches how to givepray, and fast—not for show, but to please the Father who sees in secret.
  • He gives us the Lord’s Prayer, a model of humble, kingdom-centered petition.
  • He warns against storing up earthly treasures that won’t last, urging us to store up heavenly treasures.
  • Jesus speaks about the eye as a lamp—revealing what you’re really focused on.
  • He warns we can’t serve two masters: God and money.
  • Jesus ends with a powerful call not to worry, but to trust—because your heavenly Father knows what you need.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. The Motive of Righteousness (vv. 1–18)

  • Don’t practice righteousness to be seen by men—whether in giving, praying, or fasting.
  • Three repetitions:
    • When you give… “don’t let your left hand know what your right is doing.”
    • When you pray… “go into your room and shut the door.”
    • When you fast… “anoint your head and wash your face.”
  • Key phrase: “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

2. The Model Prayer (vv. 9–13)

  • Not a ritual, but a template:
    1. Our Father in heaven – relationship and reverence.
    2. Hallowed be Your name – worship.
    3. Your kingdom come – surrender.
    4. Your will be done – obedience.
    5. Give us this day… – daily dependence.
    6. Forgive us… as we forgive – mercy and community.
    7. Lead us not… deliver us – spiritual warfare.
  • He follows with a serious warning: if you don’t forgive, you block forgiveness in your own life (vv. 14–15).

3. Treasure and Focus (vv. 19–24)

  • Don’t invest your heart in what rusts, rots, or gets robbed.
  • The heart follows treasure—where’s yours?
  • If your eye is healthy (focused), your whole body is full of light.
  • You can’t serve both God and money—pick one master.

4. Freedom from Worry (vv. 25–34)

  • Don’t worry about food, drink, or clothes—your Father feeds birds and dresses flowers.
  • Worry changes nothing, but trust pleases God.
  • The solution?
→ “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • 1 Samuel 16:7 – “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
  • Philippians 4:6–7 – “Be anxious for nothing… and the peace of God will guard your heart.”
  • James 1:17 – “Every good and perfect gift is from above…”
  • Proverbs 3:5–6 – Trust the Lord, not your understanding.
  • Luke 12:31 – Parallel to Matthew 6:33, seek the kingdom and all else will be added.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: God is more interested in your private obedience than your public image. He rewards faithfulness that happens in secret and hearts that seek His kingdom first.

  1. Check Your Motives
    • Are you doing spiritual things to be seen, or to serve?
    • Would you still give, pray, and fast if no one ever knew?
  2. Let the Lord’s Prayer Guide You
    • It’s not just for reciting—use it as a framework for real connection with the Father.
  3. Invest in Eternity
    • Your bank account, wardrobe, or achievements won’t follow you.
    • But eternal investments—generosity, obedience, souls—do.
  4. Quit Serving Two Masters
    • You can’t split your allegiance—choose God, and everything else will find its place.
  5. Trade Anxiety for Trust
    • God knows what you need. Worry adds nothing. Trust adds everything.
