Notes – Genesis 13

Genesis 13 – Faith vs. Flesh: The Separation of Abram and Lot

“Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me… if you take the left, then I will go to the right.” (Genesis 13:9, NKJV)
“Lift your eyes now… all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.” (v. 14–15)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Abram leaves Egypt and returns to the altar at Bethel—he worships again.
  • Both Abram and Lot are now wealthy—livestock, herds, tents.
  • Conflict arises between their herdsmen.
  • Abram offers Lot first choice of the land to avoid strife.
  • Lot chooses the well-watered plain of Jordan, near Sodom—a wicked city.
  • After Lot leaves, God reaffirms His promise to Abram: land, descendants, and permanence.
  • Abram moves to Hebron and builds another altar to the Lord.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. Back to the Altar (vv. 1–4)

  • After the detour in Egypt, Abram returns to worship and reset.
  • He goes back to the last place he heard from God—Bethel.
  • Restoration begins with worship.

2. Conflict and Character (vv. 5–9)

  • Too much blessing leads to tension.
  • Abram chooses peace over pride, offering Lot the better share.
  • He trusts God to bless him regardless of the outcome.

3. Lot’s Selfish Choice (vv. 10–13)

  • Lot lifts his own eyes—not in prayer, but in greedy evaluation.
  • He chooses the best-looking land, near sinful Sodom.
  • Lot’s choice is based on sight, not faith—a critical error.

4. God Reaffirms His Promise (vv. 14–18)

  • After Lot leaves, God speaks again to Abram.
  • Lift your eyes now…” — God shows him a greater, eternal vision.
  • Abram walks the land and builds another altar—marking his faith-filled obedience.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Faith vs. Flesh:
    • Galatians 5:17 – The flesh and Spirit are always in conflict.
    • Hebrews 11:9–10 – Abram waited for a city built by God, not man.
  • Lot’s Mistake Foreshadowed:
    • Genesis 19 – Lot’s compromise leads to destruction and loss.
    • 2 Peter 2:7 – Lot was “oppressed by the filthy conduct” of Sodom, yet still righteous.
  • God’s Faithfulness to Abram:
    • Psalm 37:4 – “Delight yourself in the Lord… He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
    • Romans 4:20 – Abram did not waver at the promise of God.
  • Altar-Building as Worship:
    • Exodus 20:24 – God meets people at altars.
    • Romans 12:1 – Our bodies are now living sacrifices.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: When you walk by faith, you don’t need to grab what looks good—you trust God to give what is best.

  1. Go Back to the Altar
    • When you’ve made mistakes, return to the place you last worshiped and heard from God.
  2. Prioritize Peace Over Pride
    • Abram could’ve claimed the land, but he valued peace more than property.
    • Are there areas where you need to yield instead of fight?
  3. Don’t Choose Based Only on Appearance
    • Lot saw opportunity, but not danger. Be aware: not all open doors are from God.
  4. Lift Your Eyes When God Says So
    • Lot lifted his eyes selfishly. God told Abram to lift his eyes spiritually.
    • Wait for God’s vision, not your own version.
  5. Worship in Every Season
    • Abram marked every move with an altar.
    • Build your own altar—daily worship, surrender, and obedience.
