John 8 – Grace, Truth, and the Great “I AM”

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’” (John 8:58, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
This chapter opens with a trap: the religious leaders bring a woman caught in adultery to Jesus, hoping to test Him. Instead, they’re silenced by truth and grace. Jesus then teaches about being the Light of the World, confronts the hypocrisy and unbelief of the Pharisees, and declares His eternal identity.
- Jesus teaches in the temple courts; the crowd gathers early.
- A woman is brought in—caught in the act of adultery.
- The Pharisees demand judgment; Jesus writes on the ground and says,
“He who is without sin… throw the first stone.” - One by one, they leave. Jesus tells her, “Go and sin no more.”
- Jesus declares, “I am the Light of the World.”
- The Pharisees accuse Him of self-promotion, but Jesus asserts He is from the Father.
- He exposes their slavery to sin and their rejection of truth.
- They claim Abraham as their father, but Jesus says,
“You are of your father the devil.” - The chapter climaxes with His bold declaration: “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
- The Jews attempt to stone Him, but He slips away.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- Grace Doesn’t Ignore Sin—It Transforms (vv. 1–11)
Jesus doesn’t condone the woman’s sin, but He also doesn’t condemn her. Instead, He calls her to freedom and transformation. - Jesus Is the Light of the World (v. 12)
His presence reveals truth, dispels darkness, and guides the lost. Those who follow Him will not walk in darkness. - Religion Without Truth Is Bondage (vv. 13–36)
The Pharisees cling to heritage and legalism, but Jesus offers true freedom to those who continue in His word. - Spiritual Ancestry Matters More Than Physical (vv. 37–47)
They claim Abraham—but reject Abraham’s God. Jesus reveals their true spiritual lineage: not Abraham, but the devil. - Jesus Is Eternal God in Flesh (vv. 48–59)
His final words—“I AM”—are a clear declaration of divinity, echoing Exodus 3:14. It’s why they try to kill Him.
