Notes – John 10

John 10 – The Good Shepherd and the Door

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

Jesus continues teaching after healing the blind man in John 9. He now uses shepherding language familiar to the people, revealing His heart, mission, and divine nature.

  • Jesus contrasts Himself with thieves, robbers, and hirelings who care nothing for the sheep.
  • He says:
    • “I am the door.”
    • “I am the good shepherd.”
  • The good shepherd knows His sheep by name, and the sheep know His voice.
  • He speaks of laying down His life voluntarily—no one takes it from Him.
  • He promises abundant life to those who enter through Him.
  • The Jews are divided: some say He’s demon-possessed, others recognize truth.
  • Later at the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) in Jerusalem, Jesus is challenged:“If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
  • He answers boldly:“I and My Father are one.”
  • They pick up stones to kill Him—but He escapes again.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

  1. Jesus Protects and Provides (vv. 1–10)
He is the door—the only way to eternal life. All others are thieves who come to steal, kill, and destroy.
  2. The Good Shepherd Knows You (vv. 11–15)
Jesus isn’t distant—He knows your name, your pain, your path. Unlike a hired hand, He stays when danger comes.
  3. Jesus Lays Down His Life Voluntarily (vv. 17–18)
He wasn’t a victim—He willingly gave His life. This is sovereign sacrifice, not martyrdom.
  4. One Flock, One Shepherd (v. 16)
Jesus hints at Gentile inclusion—a prophecy of the global Church united under Him.
  5. His Deity Divides the Crowd (vv. 22–39)
His claim of unity with the Father is not metaphor—it’s a declaration of divinity, and the religious leaders know it.

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Jesus is not just a leader—He is the loving Shepherd who protects, provides, and personally calls you to abundant life.

  1. Listen for His Voice
Jesus calls His own by name. If you’re unsure, slow down and listen. His sheep know His voice.
  2. Follow Through the Door
Salvation isn’t about works—it’s about entering through the Door, Jesus. Don’t try to climb over the wall.
  3. Trust the Shepherd’s Sacrifice
He laid down His life for you, not just humanity. He didn’t flinch when wolves came.
  4. Stay in the Flock
Isolation is dangerous. The enemy preys on stragglers. Stay near the Shepherd and His people.
  5. Stand Firm When Truth Divides
Jesus’ words divide crowds. Be ready to stand for truth, even when others pick up stones.
