Notes – 2 Corinthians 8

2 Corinthians 8 – The Ministry of Giving

“Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia.” (2 Corinthians 8:1, NKJV)
“But as you abound in everything… see that you abound in this grace also.” (v. 7)
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor…” (v. 9)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul addresses the generosity of the Macedonian churches, using them as an example of sacrificial giving
  • He encourages the Corinthians to excel in the grace of giving just as they excel in other areas
  • Paul reminds them of the grace of Christ, who gave everything for their sake
  • The chapter outlines principles of giving, emphasizing that it should be voluntary, sacrificial, and motivated by love
  • He also speaks to the importance of accountability and equal sharing in the body of Christ

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. The Example of the Macedonian Churches (vv. 1–5)

“They gave… beyond their ability…”
The Macedonians’ giving was sacrificial, not based on abundance
“They first gave themselves to the Lord…”
True giving begins with a surrendered heart to God
“And beyond our expectation, they gave of their own accord…”
Giving was voluntary, motivated by love and grace, not obligation

2. The Challenge to the Corinthians (vv. 6–9)

“Therefore we urge Titus… to complete this grace in you as well.”
Paul encourages them to follow through on their previous commitment to give
“But as you abound in everything… see that you abound in this grace also.”
Generosity is a grace to be cultivated alongside other spiritual qualities
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ…”
Christ’s sacrifice — His poverty for our riches — is the ultimate example of selfless giving

3. Principles of Giving (vv. 10–15)

“I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago…”
Paul encourages them to finish what they had started — and do it with generosity
“For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has…”
God looks at willingness, not the size of the gift
“For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened…”
Giving should be balanced so that no one is overburdened, but all share equally
“As it is written, ‘He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.’”
The principle of equity — sharing the resources so that no one suffers

4. Titus and the Commitment to Give (vv. 16–24)

“But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.”
Titus is a trusted partner in the ministry of giving, showing integrity and love
“We have sent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel…”
Paul emphasizes accountability in handling the gift, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness
