Notes – 2 Corinthians 5

2 Corinthians 5 – The Ministry of Reconciliation

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (v. 17)
“Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ…” (v. 20)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul describes the hope of resurrection and the eternal glory that awaits believers
  • He speaks of the temporary nature of earthly life and the eternal perspective of faith
  • Paul emphasizes the new creation believers become when in Christ
  • He describes the ministry of reconciliation, where believers are called to bring others to Christ
  • The chapter closes with the great exchange of Christ’s righteousness for our sin

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. The Eternal Perspective (vv. 1–5)

“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God…”
Paul contrasts earthly mortality with the eternal resurrection body
“We groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven.”
Believers are yearning for transformation, not just relief from earthly struggles
“Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.”
The Holy Spirit is our seal and guarantee for eternal life

2. Walking by Faith (vv. 6–10)

“We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”
Believers live with confidence in their eternal future
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ…”
The judgment of believers is about rewards, not salvation
“That each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
Our life choices matter for eternal rewards

3. The Love of Christ Compels Us (vv. 11–15)

“Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men…”
Paul’s ministry is rooted in reverence for God and a desire to reach others
“For the love of Christ compels us…”
The love of Christ drives their motivation and service
“He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him…”
Our new life in Christ is meant to be lived for His glory, not our own

4. New Creation in Christ (vv. 16–17)

“From now on, we regard no one according to the flesh…”
Christ’s death has changed the way believers see people
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…”
Christ brings total transformation — old life is gone, new life has come

5. The Ministry of Reconciliation (vv. 18–21)

“Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ…”
God has reconciled believers to Himself, removing the barrier of sin
“And has given us the ministry of reconciliation…”
We are ambassadors of Christ, entrusted with the message of reconciliation
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us…”
Christ took our sin so that we could take on His righteousness
“That we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Through Christ’s sacrifice, we stand righteous before God
