Notes – 2 Corinthians 13

2 Corinthians 13 – Final Exhortations and Greetings

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.” (2 Corinthians 13:5, NKJV)
“For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God.” (v. 4)
“Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” (v. 11)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul gives a final exhortation to the Corinthians to examine their spiritual lives
  • He warns them about living in sin and challenges them to test whether they are truly walking in the faith
  • Paul speaks about his own weakness and how Christ’s power works through it
  • He concludes with a blessing, encouraging them to be united, mature, and at peace
  • The chapter closes with a gracious and affirming benediction from Paul

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Examine Yourselves (vv. 1–6)

“This will be the third time I am coming to you…”
Paul is coming for a third visit, and he wants them to be ready and right with God
“In the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”
Paul references a principle of church discipline — things should be addressed by witnesses
“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith.”
Paul urges the Corinthians to test their faith, making sure they are truly walking with Christ
“Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?”
He reminds them that the Holy Spirit is within them, confirming their salvation
“Unless indeed you are disqualified.”
A warning to ensure they’re living in accordance with the gospel, or risk being found unfit

2. Paul’s Suffering and Christ’s Power (vv. 7–10)

“Now I pray to God that you do no evil…”
Paul’s desire for them is to live righteously and according to God’s will
“For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.”
Paul stands firmly for truth — not manipulating the message for personal gain
“For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God.”
Paul reflects on Christ’s weakness in the flesh (crucifixion) but affirms His power through the resurrection
“For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God…”
Believers share in Christ’s suffering but also in His resurrection power

3. Final Exhortation and Blessing (vv. 11–14)

“Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort…”
Paul’s final words encourage them to mature in faith and live in unity and peace
“Be of one mind, live in peace…”
He calls for reconciliation and unity among the believers, as peace is central to the Christian walk
“And the God of love and peace will be with you.”
He assures them that God’s presence will empower them to live out these commands
“Greet one another with a holy kiss.”
A final gesture of love and unity among the believers
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
Paul ends with a trinitarian blessing — invoking the full Godhead’s presence on the believers
