1 Corinthians 13 – The Way of Love

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass…” (1 Corinthians 13:1, NKJV)
“Love never fails.” (v. 8)
“Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (v. 13)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul interrupts his teaching on spiritual gifts to explain something more important: love
- He shows that even the greatest gifts are useless without love
- Then he gives one of the most beautiful, detailed descriptions of what love is and is not
- He ends by declaring that love will outlast everything — even prophecy and knowledge
- In heaven, gifts will fade — but love will remain
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Gifts Without Love Are Empty (vv. 1–3)
“I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal…”
Without love, even spiritual gifts are just noise
“If I have prophecy… understand all mysteries… have all faith…”
Even powerful ministry and deep theology are worthless without love
“If I give… but have not love, it profits me nothing.”
Generosity and sacrifice mean nothing if not motivated by love
2. What Love Looks Like (vv. 4–7)
“Love suffers long and is kind…”
Love is patient and kind — two foundational attributes
“Does not envy… does not parade itself… is not puffed up…”
Love is humble, not competitive or arrogant
“Does not behave rudely… does not seek its own…”
Love is others-focused, not selfish
“Is not provoked… thinks no evil…”
Love is slow to anger and refuses to hold grudges
“Rejoices in the truth…”
Love never celebrates wrong, but rejoices in what’s right
“Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Love is loyal, trusting, hopeful, and resilient
3. Love Is Greater Than All Gifts (vv. 8–13)
“Love never fails…”
Unlike gifts, love does not expire
“Prophecies… tongues… knowledge… will vanish away.”
Spiritual gifts are temporary tools for this age
“Now I know in part, but then I shall know…”
In eternity, gifts will be obsolete — but love will be fully realized
“Faith, hope, love… the greatest of these is love.”
Even among the essentials — love stands above all
