1 Corinthians 10 – Warnings from Israel’s History

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12, NKJV)
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man… but God is faithful.” (v. 13)
“Whether you eat or drink… do all to the glory of God.” (v. 31)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul reminds the church of Israel’s past failures in the wilderness
- Though they had spiritual experiences, many fell because of idolatry, sexual immorality, and rebellion
- He gives a warning: don’t be overconfident — take temptation seriously
- God is faithful to provide a way out of temptation
- Paul closes with instructions on idolatry, liberty, and glorifying God
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Learning from Israel’s Example (vv. 1–5)
“All were under the cloud… all passed through the sea…”
Israel had God’s visible presence and deliverance, yet still failed
“But with most of them God was not well pleased…”
Spiritual privilege doesn’t guarantee spiritual maturity
2. Warnings Against Sin (vv. 6–11)
“Do not become idolaters as were some of them…”
Paul points to the golden calf incident (Exodus 32)
“Nor let us commit sexual immorality… nor tempt Christ…”
He references Numbers 21 (fiery serpents) and Numbers 25 (Moabite women)
“They were written for our admonition…”
These events are warnings for us, not just history lessons
3. Temptation and Trust (v. 12–13)
“Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”
Spiritual pride leads to downfall — stay alert
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man…”
You’re not alone — temptation is universal
“God is faithful… will make the way of escape…”
You’re not powerless — God provides a way out
4. Flee Idolatry (vv. 14–22)
“Flee from idolatry.”
Don’t argue with temptation — run from it
“The cup of blessing… is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?”
You can’t share communion with both Christ and demons
“Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy?”
God is a jealous God — don’t compromise your worship
5. Use Liberty Wisely (vv. 23–33)
“All things are lawful… but not all things edify.”
Freedom must be guided by love and wisdom
“Eat whatever is sold in the meat market…”
Paul allows liberty — but adds a conscience clause for others
“Whether you eat or drink… do all to the glory of God.”
The ultimate standard: does this glorify God and help others?
