Genesis 2:7 — The First Mention of Soul (Nephesh)
S — Scripture
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of
life; and man became a living soul.” — Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
Key Hebrew Words:
Formed (yatsar): To shape, fashion like a potter shaping clay.
Dust (aphar): Dry earth, ashes, soil — humble origin.
Breathed (naphach): To blow, to breathe out, to inflate.
Breath of life (nishmat chayyim): Breath of lives — fullness of life.
Living soul (nephesh chayyah): Living being, personhood, identity.
O — Observation
God formed man personally and intentionally like a potter with clay.
Dust alone was not enough — divine breath activated life.
Nephesh means the whole animated self — mind, will, emotions, identity.
Divine CPR: The Creator Himself initiated life through breath.
From Genesis to Revelation, breath signifies revival and restoration.
A — Application
If God can form from dust and breathe life into lifeless matter, then He can redeem, restore, and rebuild
what seems beyond hope. Dust is not disqualification — it is raw material. Ashes are not the end —
they are ingredients. If you are breathing, God is not finished.
P — Prayer
Lord God my Father in Heaven, You formed me from dust and breathed life into my soul. You know my
history, my dreams, my regrets, and my redeemed story. When life feels like dirt or ashes, remind me
that dust is where You begin. Help me to look up instead of around. Let the breath You placed in me
become words that heal. Help me to Pause. Breathe. Speak. Turn my mourning into dancing and my
weeping into singing. Let Your peace, power, and grace be seen in me. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen and Amen.
