🌬 Born of the Wind & Living for His Glory

S.O.A.P. Study – John 3:6–8; 3:29–31

S — Scripture

John 3:6–8 (NLT)
“Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

John 3:29–31 (NLT)
“It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the bridegroom’s friend is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else.”

O — Observation

Jesus draws a sharp line between what is earthly and what is heavenly.

Human effort produces human results.
The Spirit produces spiritual life.

The wind becomes a metaphor for the sovereignty of God — unseen, uncontrollable, undeniable. We cannot manufacture new birth. We cannot schedule revival. We cannot engineer transformation. It is a work of the Spirit.

Then John the Baptist shifts the focus from spiritual birth to spiritual posture.

He sees Jesus rising in influence. His own platform shrinking. And instead of insecurity… he feels joy.

“He must increase. I must decrease.”

John understands something culture does not:
True greatness is not measured by visibility — but by alignment.

Christ is from above. We are from below.
He is eternal. We are temporary.
He is the Bridegroom. We are servants.

The wind moves. The Bridegroom reigns.
Our role is surrender.

A — Application (Personalized & Powerful)

I cannot produce spiritual life in myself or others.
I cannot force growth, outcomes, or recognition.

The Spirit moves where He wills.

My responsibility is not control — but obedience.

When success comes — it is His.
When influence shifts — it is His.
When doors open or close — it is His.

If my ego flares when someone else rises, I must ask:
Am I building my name… or celebrating His?

John’s joy came from watching Jesus succeed.

That is freedom.

Today I choose:

  • To trust the invisible work of the Spirit.
  • To release control of outcomes.
  • To celebrate Christ being magnified — even if I am minimized.
  • To measure success by faithfulness, not applause.

He must increase.
I must decrease.

And there is deep peace in that.

P — Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the gift of new birth by Your Spirit.
Blow through my life like the wind — unseen but powerful.
Strip away my need for recognition.
Guard me from comparison.
Give me the joy of John the Baptist —
a joy that celebrates Jesus being exalted.

Make me faithful in the shadows.
Make me humble in success.
Make me surrendered in uncertainty.

You are from above.
You are greater than all.

Increase in me.
And let my life quietly decrease for Your glory.

Amen.
