If You Saw a Brother Heading Toward a Cliff

If You Saw a Brother Heading Toward a Cliff

1. The Picture

James tells us:

> “Whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)

If we saw someone we loved walking toward the edge of a cliff, love would not stay quiet. In the same way, love cannot remain silent when a brother or sister walks toward spiritual destruction.

2. The Work of the Spirit

It is the Spirit of God who convicts the heart (John 16:8). Our words alone cannot save. But the Spirit often works through us:

We pray with sincerity for our brother.

We speak gently and humbly.

The Spirit breathes power into our words at the right time.

If we wait for the Spirit without ever opening our mouths, that can become an excuse for silence. But if we speak without prayer and discernment, we may wound instead of heal. Both are needed.

3. Love That Acts Boldly

Love does not sit idle when someone we care for is in danger. Yet it also does not condemn harshly. Love prays, and when it speaks, it does so with humility.

Boldness is not anger or force—it is courage born of love and prayer. Boldness means:

First searching our own hearts (Luke 6:42).

Speaking not to prove we are right, but to point to Christ.

Being willing to be misunderstood or even rejected, because eternal life is more important than temporary comfort.

4. A Path Forward With Our Younger Brother

1. Prayer First – lift him up daily, asking God to soften his heart.

2. Shine as Light – let our lives of peace and faith be a witness stronger than words.

3. Ask, Don’t Accuse – instead of “you are in darkness,” ask, “Brother, have you thought about where this road leads? Can we walk with you toward life?”

4. God’s Timing – sometimes we are called to speak directly, other times to wait until the heart opens. Both can be love when led by the Spirit.

Closing Thought

We cannot passively watch as someone we love walks toward destruction, but we must not rush in pride either. Love prays, discerns, and speaks with humility, trusting God to work. True boldness is sacrificial love that risks rejection for the sake of salvation.
