Once Saved Always Saved Doctrinal View ~ Deeper Dive

A conversation between brothers!

Affirm shared beliefs first (Trinity, salvation by grace, authority of Scripture). Then challenge the Orthodox view (salvation as synergistic and conditional). Finally, build a biblical case for the eternal security of the believer.

⚖ Step 1: Acknowledge Shared Ground

Shared Beliefs:

Jesus is the only Savior. Salvation begins by grace through faith. The Bible is God’s inspired Word.

Start by saying:

“We both believe salvation is from God, not earned by our merit. But what we differ on is whether that salvation can be lost once truly received.”

đŸȘ“ Step 2: Clarify the Orthodox View (and its Weakness)

Greek Orthodox Doctrine:

Teaches synergism (cooperation between human will and divine grace). Believes a person can fall away from grace by persistent sin or failure to repent.

Why That’s Problematic:

It makes salvation dependent on human consistency, not God’s power. It undermines assurance of salvation. It contradicts clear promises in Scripture that speak of God’s preserving work.

Ask this question:

“If you believe you are saved today, what would cause you to be unsaved tomorrow? And who determines if you’ve crossed that line — you or God?”

🔐 Step 3: Show that Salvation Is a Work of God from Start to Finish

Key Verse:

Philippians 1:6 (NKJV) – “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

God begins the work. God completes it. It’s not partially His work and partially yours.

Ask:

“If salvation depends on God finishing what He starts, how could you undo it by your own failure?”

🧬 Step 4: Salvation Means New Birth – You Can’t Be ‘Unborn’

Key Verse:

John 10:28–29 (NKJV) – “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father
is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.”

If you’re born again into God’s family (John 3:3), you’re His child. Just like a child can disobey but can’t un-become a son or daughter, so a believer can fail but can’t reverse the new birth.

Ask:

“If Jesus gave you eternal life, how long is it? If it can end, was it ever truly eternal?”

đŸ•Šïž Step 5: Sealed by the Holy Spirit = Permanent Ownership

Key Verse:

Ephesians 1:13–14 (NKJV) – “You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession
”

“Sealed” = marked for God’s ownership. “Guarantee” = down payment God will fully redeem.

Ask:

“If the Spirit is God’s guarantee, how can a human act override God’s pledge?”

đŸ›Ąïž Step 6: Eternal Security Doesn’t Promote Sin — It Produces Grateful Obedience

Greek Orthodox objection:

“But doesn’t this lead people to live in sin?”

Response:

“True believers aren’t looking for a license to sin. The mark of real salvation is a new heart that desires holiness.”

Key Verse:

Romans 6:1–2 (NKJV) – “Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!”

Eternal security is not a loophole — it’s a promise that God keeps His own.

🧠 Step 7: Challenge the Logic of Loss-of-Salvation Theology

Ask:

“How many sins does it take to lose salvation? Where’s the line? Do you live with constant fear that you’ve lost it and need to regain it again and again?”

That system leads to either:

Pride (thinking you’re doing enough), or Despair (thinking you never can).

Jesus offers peace and assurance.

🔚 Step 8: Wrap with Gospel Assurance

Key Verse:

Romans 8:38–39 (NKJV) – “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life
nor things present nor things to come
shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

No condition. No exceptions. That’s security.

đŸȘ™ Conclusion (with gentle challenge)

“If Jesus paid it all, and He said, ‘It is finished,’ then what makes you think your weakness could undo what His blood accomplished?”

If salvation is truly a gift from start to finish — then the one who receives it cannot lose it, because God does not take back His gifts.

  1. I don’t think Philippians 1:6 is talking about a guaranteed ticket to heaven for the church in Philippi, Paul is thanking the Philippians church for their fellowship in the gospel from day 1 until that day, he is talking to them as a whole, how he is confident God will perfect that good work. and it’s not even talking about salvation in it or the guarantee of it.

and yes, salvation is depended on human consistency, if we walk away from God he will walk about from us (2 Timothy 2:12) (john 15:1-8)

John 10:28–2, we agree that no one can snatch us out of his hand, BUT we can freely walk away, just because we have salvation does not mean we don’t have free will. and you can obtain eternal life then lose it, nothing is illogical about it, think about this, if I have an infinite amount of chocolate bars, then God takes it away, you asked “was it ever infinite” yes of course it was but we lost it.

“13 In Him, you also, after listening to the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise” , we agree once you believe, you are guaranteed the holy spirit, its a if, then statement, IF you believe, THEN holy spirit, if you stop believing then you don’t have the holy spirit

“How many sins does it take to lose salvation? Where’s the line? Do you live with constant fear that you’ve lost it and need to regain it again and again?” a mortal sin. 1 John 5:16-17

35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written,

    “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;
We were counted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

we agree none of those things can separate us from god’s love

    ps. I’m catholic not orthodox
