Genesis 38 – Judah, Tamar, and the Scandal That Led to Grace
“She is more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” (Genesis 38:26, NKJV)
“Perez… the ancestor of David and of Christ.” (Matthew 1:3)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

- He has three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah.
- Er marries Tamar, but he is wicked and God kills him.
- Judah tells Onan to marry Tamar (levirate marriage), but Onan refuses to give her a child—God strikes him dead too.
- Judah fears losing another son, so he sends Tamar away, delaying Shelah.
- Tamar realizes Judah won’t give her Shelah, so she disguises herself as a prostitute and waits by the road.
- Judah, not recognizing her, sleeps with her, giving her his signet, cord, and staff as a pledge.
- Tamar becomes pregnant.
- When Judah hears Tamar is pregnant, he demands she be burned—until she reveals he is the father.
- Judah says, “She is more righteous than I.”
- Tamar gives birth to twins, Perez and Zerah.
- Perez becomes an ancestor of King David and Jesus.
