Notes – Romans 5

Romans 5 – Peace With God Through Christ

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1, NKJV)
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

Paul builds on the foundation of justification by faith (Romans 4) and now celebrates what it brings into the life of the believer:

  • We now have peace with God through Jesus.
  • We stand in grace, and we rejoice in hope of God’s glory.
  • Suffering is reframed—it produces perseverance, character, and hope.
  • Hope doesn’t disappoint because God’s love is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
  • Christ died for the ungodly, not the righteous.
  • Rarely will anyone die for a good person, but Christ died for us while we were still sinners.
  • Through Christ’s blood, we are saved from wrath.
  • We are reconciled to God through His death—and saved by His life.
  • Then Paul compares Adam and Christ:
    • Through Adam’s sin, death entered the world.
    • Through Jesus’ obedience, many are made righteous.
    • One man brought death, the other brought life and justification.
  • Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

  1. Justification Brings Peace (vv. 1–2)
We’re no longer enemies of God. We’re at peace with Him—positionally and relationally.
  2. Suffering Has Purpose (vv. 3–5)
Trials produce something beautiful in believers: endurance → character → hope. And this hope won’t fail, because God’s love is in us.
  3. Christ Died for the Undeserving (vv. 6–8)
God’s love is not a response to our goodness—it’s a rescue mission for the unworthy.
  4. Reconciliation Changes Everything (vv. 9–11)
We were once enemies, now friends—reconciled by Jesus’ death, and sustained by His life.
  5. Adam vs. Christ: The Two Representatives (vv. 12–21)
    • Adam’s sin brought death to all.
    • Jesus’ righteousness brings life to all who believe.
    • Sin reigned in death, but grace reigns through righteousness.

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: If you’re in Christ, you’re at peace with God, filled with hope, and secure in grace—no matter what comes.

  1. Rest in God’s Peace
You are no longer separated. You don’t need to earn His love—you already have peace.
  2. Reframe Suffering With Hope
Don’t waste your pain. It’s not meaningless—it’s shaping your soul and deepening your trust.
  3. Celebrate the Love That Found You
You didn’t clean yourself up first—Christ came while you were still a sinner. That’s unconditional love.
  4. Live Like You’ve Been Reconciled
Stop acting like God’s still angry at you. He’s not. He welcomes you, and you’re called to share that reconciliation with others.
  5. Stand in Grace, Not Guilt
You’ve been transferred from Adam’s curse to Christ’s life. Stop living like a slave—walk as a son or daughter.
