Standing Firm Against False Doctrine

Introduction

Dear ones in faith, as we journey together through the Scriptures and seek to deepen our understanding of God’s truth, it is vital that we remain vigilant against the allure of false doctrines. These teachings, while often appealing, diverge from the biblical truth that leads to eternal life. Today, we will explore five prevalent examples of such teachings: Universalism, the Prosperity Gospel, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and certain doctrines of Roman Catholicism. Each of these doctrines presents a challenge to the true gospel of Jesus Christ. We will also provide practical advice on how to refute these doctrines with love and truth.

Universalism and the Narrow Path

Universalism teaches that all people will eventually be saved, regardless of their faith or actions. This belief directly contradicts Jesus’ clear teachings about salvation. In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus states, “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Practical Advice:
To refute Universalism, emphasize the exclusivity of salvation through Jesus Christ. John 14:6 is a key verse: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” Gently explain that while God’s love is vast and inclusive, salvation requires a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, involving repentance and faith.

The Prosperity Gospel and True Riches

The Prosperity Gospel teaches that God’s favor is measured by material wealth and physical well-being. However, this teaching misrepresents the essence of God’s blessings. Paul warns in 1 Timothy 6:9-10, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.”

Practical Advice:
To counter the Prosperity Gospel, highlight scriptures that focus on contentment and spiritual wealth. Point to Matthew 6:19-21, where Jesus instructs, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” Emphasize that true prosperity is found in a relationship with God and in spiritual riches, not in material wealth.

Mormonism and the Authority of Scripture

Mormonism, or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, teaches that the Bible is not the only authoritative scripture and that additional texts like the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price are also inspired. They also teach that God the Father was once a man and that humans can become gods.

Practical Advice:
To refute Mormonism, stress the sufficiency and finality of the Bible. Use 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” Additionally, Isaiah 43:10 refutes the idea of humans becoming gods: “Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.” Encourage Mormons to critically examine the contradictions between their teachings and the Bible, and gently guide them toward the truth found solely in Scripture.

Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Deity of Christ

Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the full deity of Jesus Christ, teaching that He is a created being, specifically Michael the Archangel, and not equal with God the Father. This belief directly opposes the Christian doctrine of the Trinity and the biblical teaching of Jesus’ divine nature.

Practical Advice:
To refute the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses, focus on scriptures that affirm the deity of Christ. John 1:1 is pivotal: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Also, Colossians 2:9 affirms, “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” Explain that Jesus is fully God and fully man, and that salvation is found in acknowledging Him as Lord and Savior. Encourage Jehovah’s Witnesses to read these passages within their full biblical context, showing the consistency of Jesus’ divinity throughout Scripture.

Certain Doctrines of Roman Catholicism and the Sufficiency of Christ’s Work

While Roman Catholicism shares many foundational Christian beliefs, there are certain doctrines that deviate from the biblical teaching of salvation by grace through faith alone. Key issues include the belief in the necessity of sacraments, such as the Eucharist, for the grace of salvation, the concept of purgatory, and the veneration of Mary and the saints, which can obscure the centrality of Christ’s mediatory role.

Practical Advice:
To address these teachings, emphasize the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice for our salvation. Hebrews 10:10-12 states, “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.”

Encourage discussion on Ephesians 2:8-9, which clearly teaches that salvation is a gift of God’s grace, not a result of works or rituals: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Additionally, point to 1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,” to emphasize that Jesus is the only mediator we need.

Holding Fast to Sound Doctrine

As we reflect on these false doctrines, let us be encouraged by Paul’s exhortation to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2-3: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”

Practical Advice for All False Doctrines:

  1. Know the Scriptures: Deepen your understanding of the Bible. Regular study will help you recognize and refute false teachings.
  2. Speak the Truth in Love: When engaging with those who follow these doctrines, do so with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). Aim to lead them to the truth rather than simply winning an argument.
  3. Pray for Discernment: Ask God for wisdom to discern truth from error and the courage to stand firm in His Word.
  4. Rely on the Holy Spirit: Trust the Holy Spirit to guide your words and actions as you share the gospel with others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Grant us the wisdom to discern Your truth amid the noise of false doctrines. Help us to hold fast to the teachings of Your Word, finding our hope in the promise of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and seeking the true riches of Your kingdom. Strengthen us to be vigilant, to encourage and correct with patience and love, and to live lives that glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conclusion

As we navigate the many teachings we encounter in our spiritual walk, may we be rooted firmly in the Word of God. Let us strive to understand His truth fully and live it out faithfully, rejecting the false promises of doctrines that do not align with Scripture. By doing so, we remain steadfast in our journey toward the eternal life promised by our Savior.
