Scripture:
“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
—Matthew 6:27 (ESV)
Devotional:
A few years ago, I found myself in a season of deep uncertainty. I had just lost my job, and with bills piling up, I was overwhelmed with anxiety about the future. Every day felt like a battle as I wrestled with the fear of not knowing how things would turn out. I spent countless nights worrying, trying to figure out how I could control the situation, but the more I worried, the more helpless I felt. It wasn’t until I turned to God in prayer, surrendering my fears and trusting Him to provide, that I began to experience a profound sense of peace. Even though the situation didn’t immediately change, my perspective did. I realized that worry wasn’t adding anything to my life—instead, it was robbing me of the joy and peace God wanted me to experience.
In Matthew 6:27, Jesus asks a powerful question: “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” This rhetorical question highlights the futility of worry. It doesn’t change our circumstances or help us grow—physically or spiritually. Instead, it often leads us away from trusting in God’s provision and sovereignty.
In the broader context of Matthew 6, Jesus teaches about relying on God rather than being consumed by earthly concerns or daily needs. He encourages us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, with the assurance that all these things will be added unto us. This passage invites us to live by faith, trusting that God knows our needs and is fully capable of meeting them.
As I reflect on my experience and this verse, I’m reminded of how worry can cloud our judgment, strain our relationships, and hinder our spiritual growth. Jesus calls us to lay our anxieties at His feet, to trust in His perfect timing and provision, and to experience the peace that comes from depending on Him.
Practical Application:
- Surrender Your Worries: Take some time today to identify what you’re worrying about. Write them down, then prayerfully surrender each one to God. Remember that He cares for you and is in control.
- Focus on Today: Instead of being consumed by the unknowns of tomorrow, focus on being faithful in what God has placed before you today. Ask Him for the strength and wisdom to handle today’s challenges.
- Trust in God’s Provision: Reflect on past experiences where God has provided for you or led you through difficult times. Let these memories strengthen your trust in His ongoing faithfulness.
- Lean on Community: Share your struggles with a trusted friend or small group. Allow them to pray with you and encourage you. Sometimes, God’s comfort comes through the support of others.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word that reminds us of the futility of worry. Help us to trust in Your loving care and provision, knowing that You are in control of all things. Teach us to cast all our anxieties on You and to seek Your kingdom above all else. Amen.
