When I think about living for God one day at a time, I am reminded of my mom, Charlotte. Every morning, she would wake up early, long before the rest of the household, to spend quiet time with the Lord. She would sit by the window with her Bible, a cup of tea in hand, and pray, read, and meditate on God’s Word. This daily practice grounded her, giving her strength and peace to face each day’s challenges. Her unwavering faith and dedication to God inspired everyone around her.
Living for God one day at a time is a principle deeply rooted in Scripture, embracing the teaching of Jesus to not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34). To live for God daily involves several key practices and attitudes that align with biblical teachings:
- Prayer and Communion with God: Begin each day with prayer, seeking God’s presence and guidance. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), emphasizing our dependence on God for the provision of our daily needs and the importance of maintaining a daily relationship with Him.
- Study and Meditate on the Word: The psalmist declares, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). Daily reading and meditation on God’s Word guide our steps according to His will, providing wisdom, comfort, and instruction for righteous living.
- Submit to God’s Will: Each day, seek to do God’s will above your own. Jesus exemplified this in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed, “yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Recognize that God’s plans are higher than ours and strive to align your daily actions with His purposes.
- Live in Faith and Trust: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). Daily trust in God’s provision and his sovereignty over your life dispels worry and fear, grounding you in His peace.
- Serve and Love Others: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Jesus’ command to love others is a daily call to action, serving and showing compassion to those around us, reflecting God’s love through our deeds and words.
- Practice Gratitude: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever (Psalm 107:1). Cultivating a heart of gratitude, recognizing and appreciating God’s blessings, fosters contentment and joy in our daily walk with Him.
- Repentance and Forgiveness: Be quick to seek forgiveness and to forgive, remembering that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Daily repentance keeps our hearts humble and reconciled with God and others.
Living for God one day at a time is a journey of faith, leaning on God’s grace and strength, and seeking to embody His love and righteousness in every aspect of our lives. By focusing on these daily practices, we cultivate a closer relationship with God and grow in our Christian walk.
May each day bring you closer to Him as you seek His will, trust in His provision, and reflect His love in all you do.
