Scripture:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
— Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.”
— C.S. Lewis
Reflection:
In our daily lives, it’s easy to become consumed by the pursuit of earthly treasures. We work hard to accumulate wealth, possessions, and achievements. While these things can bring temporary satisfaction, they are ultimately fleeting and vulnerable to decay and theft. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:19-21 that our true treasure should be in heaven. He emphasizes that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.
C.S. Lewis echoes this sentiment, urging us to aim at heaven. When we focus our hearts and minds on heavenly things, we gain not only eternal rewards but also find that our earthly needs are met. However, if our primary aim is earthly success, we risk losing both the eternal and the temporal.
Additional Scriptures:
- Colossians 3:1-2
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” - 1 Timothy 6:17-19
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” - Hebrews 13:5
“Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to set my heart on things above and not be consumed by the pursuit of earthly treasures. Remind me daily that my true treasure is in heaven, where neither moth nor rust can destroy. Teach me to aim at heaven in all I do, trusting that You will provide for my needs. May my heart be fully devoted to You, and may my actions reflect Your love and generosity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions:
- Personal Evaluation: What are the things I value most in my life right now? Are they more earthly or heavenly in nature?
- Priority Check: How much time and energy do I invest in things that will last for eternity versus things that are temporary?
- Contentment: Do I struggle with contentment? How can I learn to be content with what God has given me?
- Generosity: In what ways can I be more generous with my time, talents, and resources?
- Trust: Do I trust God to provide for my needs, or do I find myself worrying and striving to accumulate more?
- Heart Alignment: What steps can I take to align my heart more closely with God’s priorities?
Application:
- Evaluate Your Treasures: Take a moment to reflect on what you value most in life. Are these treasures earthly or heavenly? Ask God to help you align your priorities with His kingdom.
- Invest in Eternal Treasures: Look for ways to invest in things that have eternal value. This could be through acts of kindness, sharing the gospel, or supporting your church and missions.
- Trust in God’s Provision: Practice trusting God to meet your needs rather than striving to accumulate wealth. Remember His promise in Hebrews 13:5 that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
By focusing our hearts on heavenly treasures, we align ourselves with God’s will and purpose for our lives, finding true satisfaction and eternal rewards.
