The Importance of a Healthy Heart

Prayer

“Father, we come before You today with open hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. Help us understand the importance of maintaining a healthy heart in our spiritual journey. As Psalm 139:23-24 says, ‘Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.’ Fill us with Your love and grace and lead us in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

We’ve been in Re:generation for nearly a year and will be finishing soon. During this time, we’ve had personal coaches, supportive community, mentors, and have completed Steps 1-9 to restore our spiritual health and develop a healthy heart. But our journey doesn’t end here. It transitions to the final three Steps 10-12, focusing on maintaining our growth, experiencing deeper intimacy with our Lord, and loving and reaching others.

The Importance of a Healthy Heart

In Step 10, we continue to practice steps 1-9. In Week 2, Day 1, we learn about the importance of having a healthy heart. I want to discuss what a healthy heart looks like according to the Bible, why it’s essential for our walk with Christ, and how we can keep it strong.

A physically healthy heart results from years of care through proper diet and exercise. It is an essential muscle that pumps and circulates blood throughout the body, crucial for life. A typical heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood daily, totaling over 700,000 gallons yearly—equivalent to an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The heart delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body while removing waste. An unhealthy heart affects the entire body. My dad had an unhealthy heart caused by working in cotton gins as a teenager, which took his life at 56. We are taught the signs of a heart attack. An unhealthy heart can kill you!

The Spiritual Heart

The Bible often speaks about the heart as the center of our being, where our thoughts, emotions, and decisions are made. It determines our actions, reactions, and the course of our lives. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

A healthy heart reflects God’s will and leads to a life filled with His peace and purpose. It recognizes sin and its need for God’s grace, swiftly confesses, and turns away from sin, desiring to live in God’s love and strength. It relies on God’s strength, admitting human weakness, and seeking His guidance in every aspect of life. It is filled with God’s love, quick to receive His grace, and responds by seeking to live a life that honors Him. It also produces the Fruit of the Spirit. Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Signs of an Unhealthy Heart

Failure to take care of our heart will result in an unhealthy one, becoming insensitive to sin and gradually drifting away from God. It tries to manage sin on its own, often leading to further entanglement in sinful behavior. A key sign of an unhealthy heart is its insensitivity to sin and its need for God. Like the signs of a physical heart attack, it’s crucial to recognize these signs and seek immediate help from God and our support community to restore our hearts.

Cultivating a Healthy Heart

  • Daily Prayer and Bible Reading: Spend time in prayer and the Word of God daily. Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas that need His touch. Memorizing the Foundation verses, including Step 10’s Psalm 139:23-24, is a great place to start.
  • Acknowledging Weaknesses: Lean on God’s strength. Remember that freedom comes as we begin depending on God to overcome daily battles.
  • Practicing Steps 1-9: Immediately take action and apply the appropriate step when aware of a sin or struggle entering your life.
  • Staying Connected: Stay connected to your ReGen 57 brothers, life groups, and mentors. Surround yourself with a supportive Christian community that encourages growth in Christ. Community is critical, and isolation must be avoided. We encourage daily check-ins with your community or someone you trust—yes, daily!

Maintaining a healthy heart is vital for our spiritual health and overall well-being. It enables us to live a life that pleases God and brings us true freedom. Let’s commit to guarding our hearts and growing closer to God by continuing Steps 1-9 and seeking His grace daily.
