Who is My God?

To discern who or what occupies the place of God or has become an idol in your life, consider reflecting deeply on the following questions, inspired by the teachings and principles found in the Scriptures:

  1. Where do I spend most of my time and energy?
    “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
    This question helps you identify what you truly value by examining how you allocate your most precious resources: time and energy.
  2. What occupies my thoughts when I have free time?
    “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)
    Your thoughts can reveal what you hold in high regard.
  3. What do I fear losing the most?
    “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19)
    This question can reveal what you hold most dear and what might be taking precedence over God in your life.
  4. What do I rely on for comfort or happiness?
    “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
    If the source of your comfort or happiness comes from something other than God, it might have taken an undue place in your life.
  5. Whose approval do I seek the most?
    “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)
    This question helps you understand whom you are trying to satisfy with your actions and choices.
  6. What makes me feel most fulfilled or accomplished?
    “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23)
    This reflects on whether your sense of fulfillment is aligned with serving God or serving worldly goals.
  7. To whom or what do I turn in times of distress?
    “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
    This can indicate whether you seek comfort and guidance from God or from other sources in difficult times.

Reflecting on these questions in the light of Scripture can help you discern what occupies the throne of your heart. God desires a relationship with us where He is our first love, our ultimate source of satisfaction, and the one we turn to in every circumstance. Idols, whatever form they may take, can distract and distance us from this relationship.
