In his letter to the Galatians, Paul contrasts the outcomes of living according to the flesh—our sinful nature—and living by the Spirit. These concepts, found in Galatians 5:16-26, are crucial for discerning one’s spiritual condition and growth.
Works of the Flesh

Paul lists the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21:
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.”
He warns that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God, highlighting the seriousness of allowing the flesh to dictate one’s life.
Fruit of the Spirit

In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is described in Galatians 5:22-23:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
These characteristics, produced by the Holy Spirit, are markedly different from the works of the flesh and demonstrate the transformative power of the Spirit in a believer’s life.
Understanding the Fruit of the Spirit
- Interconnected Qualities: The fruit of the Spirit is singular, indicating that these qualities are interconnected and grow together in the life of a believer. As believers grow in their relationship with God, all aspects of the fruit will begin to manifest more clearly and consistently.
Significance of This Contrast
- Evidence of Regeneration
The presence of the fruit of the Spirit is evidence that we have been made new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). It signifies that we are no longer living according to our sinful nature but are being led by the Spirit. - Spiritual Growth and Maturity
The development of the fruit of the Spirit indicates spiritual growth. As we mature in our faith, these qualities should become increasingly evident in our lives. - Guidance for Self-Reflection
These lists serve as a tool for self-examination. Believers can reflect on their lives to identify areas where the works of the flesh are evident and seek the Spirit’s help in transforming these areas. - Discernment in Relationships
Understanding these concepts can also help in discerning the spiritual state of others, guiding us in how we relate to and pray for them.
Living by the Spirit
Living by the Spirit involves daily surrender to God’s will, yielding to the Spirit’s guidance, and committing to practices that nurture spiritual growth, such as prayer, reading the Bible, fellowship, and worship. As believers commit to walking in the Spirit, the natural outcome will be a life that reflects the fruit of the Spirit, demonstrating the reality of God’s work within.
