1 Peter 4:12–17
S — Scripture
Suffering as a Christian
[12] Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. [13] But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. [14] If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [15] But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. [16] Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. [17] For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
O — Observation
- Suffering is expected, not strange.
Peter tells believers not to be surprised by fiery trials. Faith does not exempt us from hardship—it prepares us for it. - Suffering connects us to Christ.
When we suffer as Christians, we are sharing in Christ’s sufferings. This produces joy rooted not in comfort, but in future glory. - Insults for Christ are a blessing.
Being opposed for Jesus’ name is evidence of God’s Spirit resting on us, not a sign of His absence. - There is a clear distinction in suffering.
We are not to suffer for sin, evil, or meddling—but if we suffer as Christians, there is no shame in it. - Obedience matters.
Peter reminds us that God’s judgment begins with His own people. The gospel is not just to be believed, but obeyed.
A — Application
- I will expect suffering as part of my walk with Christ and not interpret it as abandonment by God.
- I will rejoice in trials, knowing God uses them to refine my faith and reveal His glory.
- I will stand unashamed when I am insulted for the name of Jesus, trusting that God’s Spirit is present with me.
- I will examine my life, making sure my suffering is for righteousness, not wrongdoing.
- I will obey the gospel, remembering that faith is lived out through obedience, not just words.
P — Prayer
Father God,
Give me patience and strength when trials come. Help me to trust You in the fire and to rejoice even when I am tested. Guard my heart from shame when I am insulted for the name of Jesus, and remind me that Your Spirit rests on me in those moments. Shape my life so that any suffering I face is for righteousness and not for sin. Help me to obey Your gospel faithfully and to glorify You in every season.
Amen.
