Why the Spirit Gives Gifts—and Why He Never Uses Them to Measure Worth
INTRODUCTION
Once the discussion turns to spiritual gifts, emotions often run high.
Some Christians elevate gifts as proof of spiritual depth.
Others minimize or avoid the topic entirely, fearing abuse or excess.
Still others quietly compare themselves to those who appear more gifted—and feel lacking.
Scripture charts a wiser course.
The New Testament affirms that spiritual gifts are real, purposeful, and given by the Holy Spirit. At the same time, it repeatedly warns that gifts are never indicators of maturity, holiness, or spiritual rank.
Understanding this distinction protects both doctrine and unity.
GIFTS COME FROM THE SPIRIT—NOT THE BELIEVER
1 Corinthians 12:11
“But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
Three truths are unmistakable:
- Gifts are sovereignly given
- Gifts are unequally distributed
- Gifts are not earned
This immediately eliminates boasting, comparison, and hierarchy.
No believer chooses his gifts.
No believer deserves his gifts.
No believer owns his gifts.
GIFTS ARE FOR SERVICE, NOT STATUS
The New Testament never treats gifts as personal achievements.
1 Peter 4:10–11
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another…”
Gifts are given for others, not for self-expression.
When gifts become:
- Identity markers
- Proof of maturity
- Measures of spirituality
they are being misused—no matter how impressive they appear.
CORINTH: THE CHURCH WITH GIFTS BUT LITTLE MATURITY
No passage exposes the danger of gift-centered spirituality more clearly than 1 Corinthians.
The Corinthian church:
- Spoke in tongues
- Exercised multiple gifts
- Valued spiritual manifestations
And yet:
- They were divisive
- They were prideful
- They tolerated sin
- They lacked love
Paul never denies their gifts.
He rebukes their immaturity.
1 Corinthians 3:1
“I could not speak to you as to spiritual people, but as to carnal…”
Gifted does not mean godly.
GIFTS ≠ HOLINESS ≠ MATURITY
Scripture makes this separation explicit.
- Holiness is measured by obedience
- Maturity is measured by discernment
- Love is the governing mark of spirituality
1 Corinthians 13:1–2
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am nothing.”
Love—not gifting—is the highest evidence of the Spirit’s work.
WHY SCRIPTURE REGULATES GIFTS SO CAREFULLY
If gifts were self-authenticating, Scripture would not regulate them.
Yet Scripture repeatedly commands:
- Order
- Discernment
- Accountability
- Clarity
1 Corinthians 14:33
“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace.”
The Spirit never produces chaos for the sake of display.
WHAT ABOUT THE MORE CONTROVERSIAL GIFTS?
Scripture allows faithful Christians to differ on the continuation or cessation of certain gifts. What Scripture does not allow is:
- Using gifts to rank believers
- Using gifts to override Scripture
- Using gifts to create pressure or fear
Even where gifts are affirmed, they remain subordinate to the Word.
HOW GIFTS FIT INTO SANCTIFICATION
Gifts do not increase as sanctification progresses.
What does increase:
- Wisdom in using gifts
- Humility in exercising gifts
- Love in serving others
- Discernment in restraint
A mature believer may use gifts less dramatically—but more faithfully.
A HEALTHY BIBLICAL POSTURE TOWARD GIFTS
A biblical posture says:
- Gifts are from God
- Gifts are for service
- Gifts are not identity
- Gifts are not assurance
- Gifts are governed by love and Scripture
This frees believers from:
- Comparison
- Performance pressure
- Fear of inadequacy
- Spiritual competition
SUMMARY STATEMENT
Spiritual gifts display the Spirit’s generosity—not the believer’s maturity.
The Spirit gives gifts as He wills.
He produces holiness as we obey.
And He glorifies Christ—not the gifted.
TRANSITION TO THE FINAL POST
If believers have:
- The full Spirit at salvation
- One baptism into Christ
- Ongoing filling through obedience
- Real gifts governed by love
What does a healthy, stable, Spirit-led Christian life actually look like?
