Notes – Genesis 1

Genesis 1 – In the Beginning, God Created

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1, NKJV)
“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” (v. 31)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • God speaks, and creation obeys.
  • The world is formed in six ordered days, each with an evening and morning.
  • God makes light, sky, land, seas, plants, sun, moon, stars, birds, fish, animals, and finally—man.
  • Humanity is made in the image of God, male and female, given dominion over the earth.
  • God blesses creation and gives it a mission: be fruitful and multiply.
  • The chapter ends with God resting, satisfied with His work.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. God is the Uncreated Creator (v. 1)

  • There is no attempt to explain God—He simply is.
  • He precedes time, space, and matter and brings them into being by His word.

2. Creation Is Ordered and Purposeful (vv. 2–25)

  • Days 1–3: Forming (light/dark, sky/water, land/plants)
  • Days 4–6: Filling (sun/moon/stars, birds/fish, animals/humans)
  • Repetition of “And God said… And it was so… And God saw that it was good.”

3. Humanity: The Image-Bearers (vv. 26–28)

  • We are made in His image—with mind, will, moral conscience, creativity.
  • Male and female—both equally reflect God’s nature.
  • Given dominion over creation—not to exploit, but to steward it for God’s glory.

4. Blessing and Provision (vv. 29–30)

  • God provides food, purpose, and blessing.
  • The first environment was peaceful, vegetarian, and perfect.

5. Completion and Satisfaction (v. 31)

  • “Very good” – Everything in its place, functioning perfectly.
  • God’s creation reflects His beauty, order, and goodness.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Creation by God’s Word:
    • Psalm 33:6 – “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made…”
    • John 1:1–3 – “In the beginning was the Word… all things were made through Him.”
  • Humanity in God’s Image:
    • Psalm 8:4–6 – “You have made him a little lower than the angels… crowned with glory.”
    • Colossians 1:16 – “All things were created through Him and for Him.”
  • Sabbath Rest Begins:
    • Exodus 20:11 – “For in six days the Lord made… and rested the seventh day.”
    • Hebrews 4:9–10 – “There remains a rest for the people of God…”
  • Restoration through Christ:
    • Revelation 21:1 – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…”
    • Romans 8:22 – Creation groans for redemption.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: We were made on purpose, by a good God, in His image, for His glory. Creation is not random—it’s relational, divine, and meaningful.

  1. Live with Design
    • You are not an accident. God created you with intention and value.
    • Your body, gifts, and purpose reflect His design.
  2. Worship the Creator
    • Let the beauty and complexity of creation stir you to awe, not pride.
    • Romans 1 warns of worshiping creation instead of the Creator.
  3. Reflect His Image
    • How you live, create, speak, work, and love should mirror God’s character.
    • Pursue justice, stewardship, truth, mercy—as His representatives.
  4. Embrace Your Role in Creation
    • You have dominion and stewardship—care for what God entrusted.
    • Don’t abuse, ignore, or idolize creation—manage it under God.
  5. Rest in His Completion
    • God said, “It is very good.” Let that truth calm your heart.
    • You don’t have to create your worth—He already did.
