Notes – Isaiah 66

Isaiah 66 – The Final Word: Worship, Judgment, and Glory

“Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool… But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit…” (Isaiah 66:1–2, NKJV)
“For as the new heavens and the new earth… so shall your descendants and your name remain.” (v. 22)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • God declares His greatness—He is not confined to temples but seeks humble, contrite hearts.
  • He rebukes empty religious rituals and false worship.
  • A prophetic surprise: Zion gives birth in a day—a nation is born suddenly (possibly alluding to modern Israel).
  • God promises comfort, peace, and restoration for His faithful.
  • The chapter ends with a prophecy of God’s global gloryeternal worship, and final judgment of the wicked.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. True Worship vs. False Religion (vv. 1–4)

  • “Heaven is My throne…” – God doesn’t dwell in man-made temples.
  • He looks to the humble, not the proud.
  • Religious rituals without obedience are like offering pig’s blood—an abomination.
  • Those who choose their own ways will face delusion and judgment.

2. Sudden Birth of a Nation (vv. 5–9)

  • “Before she was in labor, she gave birth…” – A miraculous birth, often seen as a prophecy of Israel’s rebirth in 1948.
  • God promises He won’t bring to the point of birth and not deliver.
  • A declaration of His sovereign purpose and unstoppable plan.

3. Joy and Comfort for God’s People (vv. 10–14)

  • Those who love Jerusalem will rejoice with her.
  • God compares His comfort to that of a mother nursing her child.
  • His servants will see His hand of blessing, while His enemies see His fury.

4. God’s Final Judgment (vv. 15–17)

  • “The Lord will come with fire…” – a picture of the Second Coming in judgment.
  • Fire, sword, and swift judgment for the rebellious and idolaters.
  • God is not mocked—judgment is real and righteous.

5. Global Worship and Mission (vv. 18–21)

  • All nations will see His glory.
  • God will gather people from every tongue and nation.
  • Some Gentiles will be chosen as priests and Levites—a shocking expansion of God’s covenant.
  • The Great Commission finds its root here.

6. New Heavens, New Earth, and Eternal Worship (vv. 22–24)

  • Just as God creates a new heavens and new earth, so will His people remain.
  • All flesh will come to worship Him from Sabbath to Sabbath.
  • The final verse is sobering: the dead bodies of the rebellious will be a lasting sign of judgment.
  • Echoes of Revelation—eternal contrast between the righteous and the condemned.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Heaven Is My Throne:
    • Acts 7:48–49 – “The Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands…”

    • 2 Peter 3:13 – “We look for new heavens and a new earth…”

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: God is not impressed by rituals—He seeks repentance and surrender. The end of all things is not chaos, but a new creation full of worship, peace, and divine glory.

  1. Worship from the Heart
    • God seeks the humble and sincere, not the religiously proud.
    • Check your heart: is your worship real, or just routine?
  2. Rejoice in God’s Restoration
    • Even when things look broken, God is still working to restore, redeem, and give birth to something new.
  3. Trust in His Justice
    • Evil will not prevail forever. The Lord will come with fire.
    • Stay faithful—He will deal with injustice.
  4. Join the Global Mission
    • God’s plan is global worship—be part of His mission to reach the nations.
    • You have a role in His redemptive plan.
  5. Live for Eternity
    • A new creation is coming. Live now in light of forever.
    • Worship today as preparation for eternal worship.
