Notes – Zechariah 6

Zechariah 6 – Four Chariots and the Crown of the Priest-King

“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the temple of the Lord.” (Zechariah 6:12, NKJV)
“He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on His throne… and be a priest on His throne.” (v. 13)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Vision 8: Zechariah sees four chariots coming out from between two bronze mountains—symbolizing divine judgment.
  • Each chariot is pulled by different colored horses (red, black, white, and dappled)—reminiscent of the horsemen in Zechariah 1 and Revelation 6.
  • The chariots represent God’s Spirit going out to patrol and judge the earth.
  • God commands a symbolic coronation of Joshua the high priest with a crown—foreshadowing a future figure called the Branch, who will be both King and Priest.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. The Four Chariots – God’s Judgments Are Active (vv. 1–8)

  • The bronze mountains = strength, stability, and judgment.
  • The four chariots represent God’s active presence and worldwide authority—a picture of divine surveillance and enforcement.
  • The black horses go north (Babylon), the white follow, and the dappled head south (Egypt)—symbolizing global coverage.
  • “These are the four spirits of heaven…” – They are heavenly agents executing God’s will.

2. The Crowning of Joshua – A Prophetic Symbol (vv. 9–11)

  • Zechariah is told to take silver and gold and make an elaborate crown.
  • The crown is placed on Joshua the high priest—something never done in Israel’s history.
  • This blends the offices of priest and king, which only the Messiah can fulfill.

3. The Branch – The Coming Priest-King (vv. 12–13)

  • The BRANCH = the Messiah (see Zech. 3:8, Jer. 23:5).
  • He will:
    • Branch out (grow and rule)
    • Build the Lord’s temple (both spiritually and literally in the Kingdom)
    • Sit and rule on His throne
    • Be both Priest and King
    • Establish peace between both offices

4. A Memorial for the Future (vv. 14–15)

  • The crown is stored in the temple as a memorial—a prophetic reminder of the coming King.
  • People from far away will come to help build the temple—pointing to the global worship of Christ in the future reign.
  • Fulfillment depends on obedience: “This shall come to pass if you diligently obey…”

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Four Chariots / Four Spirits:
    • Revelation 6 – Four horsemen of the apocalypse.
    • Zechariah 1 – Horses patrol the earth for God.
  • Bronze Symbolism:
    • Exodus 27 – Bronze altar for judgment.
    • Daniel 2 – Bronze in Nebuchadnezzar’s statue represents earthly kingdoms.
  • The Branch (Messiah):
    • Jeremiah 23:5 – “A Branch of righteousness… a King shall reign.”
    • Isaiah 11:1 – “A Rod from the stem of Jesse.”
  • Priest and King in One:
    • Psalm 110:4 – “You are a priest forever…”
    • Hebrews 7 – Jesus is our High Priest in the order of Melchizedek (both priest and king).

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: God is preparing a Kingdom ruled by a perfect High Priest and King—Jesus Christ. His judgment is active, His temple will be complete, and His reign will bring peace.

  1. God Judges the Earth with Purpose
    • The chariots show God is not passive—He rules and judges all nations.
    • His Spirit is always at work, even when unseen.
  2. Jesus Is the Only Priest-King
    • No human leader can fulfill both roles perfectly—only Christ does.
    • He is both the sacrifice for sin and the ruler of the world.
  3. God’s Kingdom Will Be Built
    • The temple (God’s presence) will be fully established—spiritually now, and physically in the future.
    • You’re invited to be part of that eternal construction project.
  4. Your Obedience Matters
    • “This shall come to pass if you obey…” – God invites participation, not passivity.
    • Are you aligned with the King’s mission?
  5. Live Like You Serve a Risen King
    • He wears the crown, sits on the throne, and intercedes as your priest.
    • Worship Him. Trust Him. Follow Him.
